Importing US car - cost of changes?

Does anyone have any experience of bringing a US car to Switzerland and what the implications are in terms of modifications required to, e.g. lights and what any differences with things like emissions/electronics might have for service costs?

Re: Importing US car - cost of changes?

This thread covers some of the charges. The problem is there is no "standard price" as it depends on the car model. From what I hear it is a bit of a wash to import versus buy here as sometimes it's more to import and sometimes not.

Re: Importing US car - cost of changes?

Make sure your car is of a type sold in Switzerland/Europe and so has the Typenzulassung. If it has the Typenzulassung, then you can figure out what needs to be done (if anything - Switzerland has no own car manufacturers to protect). If it doesn't have the Typenzulassung, you'd have to prove its roadworthiness (in other words, forget it).

The easiest is to call the Motorfahrzeugkontrolle (automobile inspection) in your anticipated canton of residence and ask, or call a Swiss distributor for your type of car.

If you have a GM model, the same model may have been badged here as an Opel or a Vauxhall.

Automobile inspections are very strict, so your car needs to be in excellent shape.

Also check ahead of time on the availability spares, and you may want to pack a basic stock of spares (fuel filters, air filters, spare fuel pump, spark plug cables, distributor cap, belts).

It's a '98 Volvo V70 so I suppose I need to speak to a Volvo garage here.

Re: Importing US car - cost of changes?

Hi,

The more specifications about the model you have, the better it is when you speak to the Volvo garage.
FYI, we imported a (2007) Volvo from the US last year, and all changes that had to be done were easy and inexpensive (I think less than CHF 2000), and the Volvo garage even took the car through the inspection at STVA for us for a very reasonable price.
In our case, the biggest headache was to find out all the regulations for tax-free import, decide whether the move was worth it, arrange everything and move from a mid-continent location in the US (which brought up the moving cost considerably). But all in all, it very much depends on how much you value your time.

Hope this is helpful.
