Sustenpass?

Greetings all

We're off to Italy tomorrow for the weekend, and have to make a stop in totally out of the way Interlaken on the way down. Looking at google maps, there is Sustenstrasse which will eventually get us back onto the motorway down to Italy. Has anyone been on this road? Is it very widdly winedy?(how do you spell that???!!) I see the weather forecast for tomorrow is crappy too, so would I be better going back up to Luzern area again and do my normal route (I know will take a while) or try this pass?

Cheers

Cath

Re: Sustenpass?

It looks pretty wiggly to me. It's always a bad sign when the cyclists talk about a pass with such enthusiasm!

Have a good journey and have fun!

As we live on the Sustenpass I would have to say it is stunning unless there is low cloud. The road is bendy but its wide enough so not scary, but it is not fast.

Hope you do it and stop in Meiringen on the way - very relaxing.

Re: Sustenpass?

I'll bet it is a gorgeous drive in good weather, but it looks like it is going to be horrible and very very rainy all day tomorrow. Plus my son gets a bit car sick..........

Re: Sustenpass?

It's not horribly-windy and compared to the Brünig pass to get back to Luzern it won't be much worse. Not sure where you are heading in Italy but you may want to look into the Loetschberg tunnel as well. I see that there is a car-train that leaves tomorrow afternoon at 17:30 from Kandersteg (not too far from Interlaken) to Iselle, Italy (1 hour trip).

I've only been from Kandersteg to Goppenstein, which was good, but can't comment on the journey to Iselle (or from Iselle onwards).

Re: Sustenpass?

It's not too bad. The worst is when a tourist bus approaches and you have to squeeze a bit to get past. Having said that a car sick kid would be the clincher for me. My daughter used to always feel ill going over the Gotthard and once chucked up between Goschenen and Andermatt (thankfully she "recovered" when we changed car), the remainder of the journey to Lugano was not pleasant, so for this reason alone I would avoid hairpin bends.

Re: Sustenpass?

I guess it has gotten better since I was on it some 20 years ago, it was terrible then, good luck on your trip.
