The cited site says: "Works with all models of iPhone including the new 3G S." How about Symbian and Windows mobile phones? Thanks for letting us know.

Tested it yesterday on the way to St. Gallen with the 3Gs.

Three times it warned me correctly - not that I was speeding, just good
to know that big brother is watching.

Thank you very much. Not that I have any interest in speeding whatsoever you understand. It will simply make it so much easier for me to don my anorak and continue my fascinating weekend pursuit of photgraphing and cataloging speed camera images for my upcoming book - Great Speed Cameras of the European Continent.

Here is another one that was originally posted by Love Doctor then reposted by me on the iPhone thread:

"The home page of this software was posted in another thread by "the love doctor".

They sell a software on the app store that has all of the locations of fixed radar points in Europe. Now that the police know to control the Tom Tom to see if the software is there (since it is no longer legal in CH), they might not know to check your iphone (at your own risk of course).

Here is the link:

Whooooaaa there...

"Now that the police know to control the Tom Tom to see if the software is there (since it is no longer legal in CH)"

Is this for real? To 'see' cameras it is illegal??
Surely making you slow down is the aim?...but they don't want that?
Have a Garmin Nuvi btw but still interested.
It has taken me weeks to learn how to use one model.
Do the swiss police get checked out on all the gear?

I have had my first fine...+2 km/h after correction. Bugger!

Re: TRAPSTER.COM is a FREE "safety" camera download site with a map!

Food for thought:

If radar detectors are illegal in Switzerland, how does Radio Zürisee
get away with publishing mobile radar locations reported from listeners?

Radio FM1 who broadcasts between St Gallen and Sargans was forced
to stop broadcasting radar positions. BAKOM (Bundesamt für Kommuni-
kation/the government) forced them to stop about six months ago. Now
they offer a SMS service which costs an arm and a leg.

What is the difference between Radio Zürisee and this iPhone App?

BTW, I know, first hand, that radar detectors are not allowed... for a
long time now

I've wondered this too. I've been nicely pre-warned a couple of times by Radio Energy and Radio Zurisee.

My thoughts were that the radio only warns you of one and it not an updated database like to POI systems. Not quite sure if this is the case or not though.

The way I see it, there is no difference: Radio listeners send a SMS or
call a 0800 FreeCall number. The info is noted and broadcasted to the
rest of the listeners.

Trapster runs on a smart phone (or whatever) and users report via
data link on a map on the device. The location and type is then broad-
casted to other trapster users in the area.

Six to one - half dozen to the other.

I don't see it like that at all.

On the GPS all the datapoints are there. If the POI is in your database you will be warned when you drive past.

With the radio system they broadcast one maybe two camera locations at each traffic report. You need to be lucky enough to hear the traffic report, and the cameras reported need to be in the area you are driving.

So I could drive from Flums to Zurich. There is sometimes a speed camera in the last tunnel at Wallensee. If I have a GPS warning it will remind me of a potential camera every time I drive past. If I rely on the radio someone will have needed to report that camera in a short period of time before I have arrived, reported it and that camera get announced on the radio. You need to be fairly lucky.

I hear the reports numerous times a day and they have only been relevant to my journey on 2 maybe 3 occasions. The GPS would have warned me of every camera if I had it. Big difference in my book.

I see your point. Luck is a major part of the radio broadcast.

Backing up a few posts looking at the legality... Are they not the
same? ... or at least similar in their practice?

I agree with the legality question. I use the reasoning I've explained to justify it to myself as to why the radio gets away with it... but I have nothing legal to support this.

Re: TRAPSTER.COM is a FREE "safety" camera download site with a map!

Contrary to popular belief, speed cameras are placed in strategic places to enhance safety, it's absolutely nothing to do with the huge amounts of fines they collect...........LOL

Based on this, local radio stations decided to also play the game and warm motorists of dangerous areas when driving determined by the placement of speeding cameras.

Result, the police couldn't stop the radio stations as they were only enhancing the safety aspect as the police told everybody to start with.

The dialogue has now changed and any radio station who wants to receive it's chunk of state or cantonal subsidy can no longer publicise where the radar traps are as it is considered very bad form, after all, where do the radio subsidies come from if it's not the speed cameras themselves.

Private radio stations who take no subsidies however can carry on, in the interest of safety of course. The catch 22 for the State is that these private radio stations are generating plenty of revenue as more and more people listen to them, so there is less and less chance they will ever need a subsidy. Good hey !!

Re: TRAPSTER.COM is a FREE "safety" camera download site with a map!

I gave Trapster a try today on a round trip from Buchs to Samnaun.

Within the Trapster App, one has the opportunity to log a trip and save
it to the internet to share with others.

Here is today's trip.

My impressions of Trapster:

1. Tracking via GPS: As you can see the tracking was not very
accurate. The path is way off the road, sometimes half way up the
Alp or across the river next to the road. Safety problem #1.

2. Distance: According to the tracking, the distance was 52.41 miles.
Which equals 84.34 kms. Not quite! The drive clocks in with actual
3 hours - One way! (plus or minus 10 minutes for traffic). Safety
problem #2.

3. Lost tracking: Of course when there is no GPS, there is no
tracking. Tunnels, mountains, deep valleys... get my point? Safety
problem #3.

4. Time: I departed at 7:09 in the morning. The timezone used for
tracking must be EDST in the USA. Looked at the settings, noting
to set there. Safety problem #4.

During the trip I came across one traffic control on both sides of the
Fluela Pass (total = 2). I sent the notice using the App... Confirmation
was weak to say the least. I don't know if it registered or not. Safety
problem #5.

Lastly, during the trip there were not any notifications that came up
regarding radar or control along the way. I did not see any (other
than the two I sent myself) either. So, I cannot say if it worked like
it should or not. Safety problem #6, maybe

Hope that helped... if even a little.

To knowingly alter your driving behaviour because you "know" that there is a "safety control device" is illegal. Ironically this means that even knowing about the cameras is technically illegal.

Of course it isn't about safety. If it was they would tell us where everything was. Most cameras are in "danger spots". Most of these danger spots, if they were truly that dangerous, would be modified. The fact that they put up traffic light cameras instead of lengthening the yellow and put speed cameras up after speed signs that are only for idiots and truck drivers indicates to me that they are just another revenue source.

Brian.

if you want all of Europe and UK on your trapster download, you have to make several circles and overlap them, save them to a file. Be sure to check TomTom or Garmin.

I saw couple of website selling the update to BMW/ROVER factory nav (!), that will enable camera notifications. That is really cool, as more and more cars have OEM navi.
