Bern/Fribourg commute

I'm thinking of getting an apartment in Berne and commuting to my job in Fribourg. Today I was talking to a coworker and he said that the traffic would be horrible.

He doesn't live in Bern, and I claim that sure, the traffic *into* Bern in the mornings is probably bad, but I would be going in the reverse direction so it should not be a big deal.

Of course, I just arrived in Switzerland a couple of weeks ago and I am not currently staying in Berne so I wouldn't really know.

Any Bernese residents here that can put the matter to rest for me?

If you work in Central Fribourg, why not take the train ? Takes about 20 mins these days ..

Re: Bern/Fribourg commute

Because then I would also need to take the bus from my apartment to the train station, wait at the train station, then take the bus from the Fribourg train station to the workplace, which would lengthen my commute to close to 1 hour, if you add the 1/2 hour of the busses, plus the waiting around for the connections.

So, is the traffic from Berne to Fribourg really that bad in the mornings? Or is it only bad going the other way?

Thanks!

Not too sure, but know there is plenty of traffic getting on at the Wankdorf interchange, as I cross it every morning. Have a mate who used to live in Fribourg & commute the other way, will ask him what he thinks.

absolutely ... still raises a few grins in the office when someone asks "want to go to the Wankdorf Zentrum for lunch" .... followed by complete Swissy bemusement as we all crack up laughing ... small victories matter ..

Heh, yeah, and it would've been funnier had he said "getting off" instead of "getting on"....

Thank goodness for traffic flowing more in one direction! ;P

Pfffft!

Anyway, Polorise, thanks for offering to ask your friend. Will appreciate the info.

Re: Bern/Fribourg commute

With the ongoing construction work on the motorway between Bumpliz and Flamatt exit, one can forget about travelling from Bern to Fribourg by car.

Just buy a GA and take the train.

Re: Bern/Fribourg commute

compromise is to P+R to ostermundigen or bumplitz depending on where u live and take the S1 from there.
Theres a ticket between FR and BE cheaper than a full GA if you wish. Service is quite frequent.

Re: Bern/Fribourg commute

A lot depends on where in Fribourg you have to get to. ie North, South Central etc. Crossing Fribourg at peak hours can take time .

Nick.

Re: Bern/Fribourg commute

Traffic could be a problem, there are roadworks on the A12 motorway until October 2008
