Re: Thieves on trains ... in Switzerland !

Hi everyone! (My goodness this thread is long)

I just wanted to warn you that I took the train from Morges to Geneva airport on Wed June 6 and encountered a thief.

We knew about them beforehand, so even though we left our two big suitcases in the small compartment at the end of the car (with one door on either side), we sat nearby watching.

A thin black man in his 20s stood in that compartment, trying to look inconspicuous. He looked around to see if anyone was watching and then took a close look at our luggage. He had no bag or luggage with him. He stayed in that compartment for the next 2 stops and pretended to look around, but was probably just sizing up our luggage (weight, if the owners were around).

I told my boyfriend that these guys often wait until the last possible moment and exit the train just before the doors close, so even though he can't run with our luggage he could definitely get away with it. So my boyfriend stood watch.

The thief knew he had no chance, so he eventually sat down (behind me!).

Once we arrived at Geneva Airport everyone got off except for him. Our strong suspicion was confirmed. He was definitely a thief. I told one of the SBB officers about him, so I'm hoping something happened.

He had opened up one of the unlocked pockets on the front of the suitcase but I knew there nothing inside.

Keep vigilant, travellers!! Always always have your eyes on your belongings, even heavy suitcases. Don't even put your coat on the back of your chair if it has your wallet in it.

Re: Thieves on trains ... in Switzerland !

I just wanted to share my story with you guys so you are aware. I was taking the first train from Zurich to Biel/Bienne and I was tired so decided to sleep.
I was awoken by someone trying to take my phone from my pocket. Luckily I woke up in time and was able to stop him but i didnt know what else to do other tell him to "F" off. I wasnt sure if I could or should report it because as far as I'm aware no crime actually occured. He was pretending to be asleep and lean forward and that his hand had accidentally fell on my leg and moving to take my phone.

What should I have done?

Thrown him to the floor. Pummeled his head and kicked him in the nuts. Stamped on his ribcage and then screamed at the top of your voice. And then maybe try and get help .....

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience.

A man told a similar story on the radio this morning. It seems there's a Moroccan gang roaming trains while looking for sleeping victims. They use knives to cut open purses and even pants. The SBB gave an official warning regarding this increased criminal activity and recommended passengers to sit near others on the train in order to avoid waking up to a horrible surprise.

I had the same thing happen to me about 1/2 year ago. I woke up to a guy trying really hard to slowly push/slide my mobile phone out of my rather tight jeans pockets. as soon as I caught him he moved to another spot. Later when I left the train i took a photo of him with the phone he was trying to steal. caught him by surprise. Unfortunately the pic didnt turn out properly and was useless. but i'd suggest anyone who has this happen to do the same. take a pic of the culprit if you can. Then hand it to the police.

I have not been subjected to abuse apart from one crack-smoking Swiss guy on an S2 train near Zurich. This was after smoking was banned on the trains, what should I do when the guy across the aisle gets out his pipe, aluminum and Zippo and toots on the train?

He did wait until I was by the door until he started.
I thought that only tobacco smoking was banned on trains?

That is really annoying. Yes, also in Switzerland there are some thieves, but compare to eg Belgium it is much safer here.

Last summer I forgot to close the terasse door and was gone for the whole weekend. Nothing was stolen! Unbelievable in other countries

Lived there for years. Not sure I am allowed to say this bit here I go....

Organized gangs of Eastern Europeans used to roll the country manors and estates. They were also into highly efficient luxury car thieving and could get a Bentley from Flanders to Russia in no time.

Gypsies had cornered petty crime around suburbia and train stations. North Africans were more your snatch and grabbers in town.

I worked with crime fighting authorities whilst there.

Cue the "racist" rants now"…
