Has anyone ever... leased a car with only an L Permit?

I'm stuck in hospital on bed rest and am expecting twins in December. The hunt is on for us to buy a car as soon as possible and it needs to be fairly big (am thinking Kombi size). We've not lived in Switzerland long and my husband is still on an L Permit which expires Sept 10, at which point we've been told we'll be shunted up to B Permit status (oh the trepidation...).

Long story not particularly short is that we've only got a few thousand CHFs to spend at the moment (5-10k) and need a reliable and decent car which will probably be used for the very occasional drive back to the UK. I would much rather lease than buy for obvious superficial reasons but perhaps not the most economically sensible. Husband would rather buy and keeps sending me links from Autoscout of 70s minivans the likes of which Scooby Doo and his pals zipped around in, solving all manner of dastardly crimes.

Regardless of all of this we are without B Permit - is leasing therefore out of the question?

Any and all help gratefully received........... unless it's comments from people telling me I should have searched more threads beforehand to find the answer.

Pretty much the same experience we had, in the end I drove one of our cars here instead.

when your location states "near Zurich", where is that? Admittedly with twins you probably need a car but do you really neeeed a car?

Re: Has anyone ever... leased a car with only an L Permit?

Hi Boxman

Am in Lachen (well, officially Altendorf but closer to Lachen)..... think we 'spoke' a couple of months back about gynaes.

In answer - I think we do really need a car. Would feel a bit stranded without one I think. I don't fancy hoiking the double buggy up the steps of the trains and have no idea how we'd get to supermarkets etc. Also if we needed to whiz to the doctor's/etc I would have to go on foot. Having come from London I'm a bit reluctant to rely on the one lone taxi which loiters outside Lachen station in case of dire need, especially as we'd need car seats.

I am in the midst of hormonal rage about the car issue though, I must admit... partly perhaps induced by my inability to get out and about and look myself. But the way things are going we'll be driving around in some grim heap which frankly depresses me at the moment.

Re: Has anyone ever... leased a car with only an L Permit?

public transport and a lot of prams don't mix well - they're too wide to get between the thin metal barriers on some trams for example

a double wide or double long twins pram would be a nightmare!

i think a car would in some situations definitely save you a lot of agro

and as for leasing vs buying - well i'd rather lease a new one to ensure that i was getting the best safety for my kids - an el'cheapo van from the 70's or 80's wouldn't be the safest option for sure

just my $0.02c

but leasing on an L - doubt you'll have a chance at all...

Re: Has anyone ever... leased a car with only an L Permit?

We were able to lease a car prior to receiving our permit which ended up being an L permit (we thought we were getting B, go figure). I'm pretty sure we had to provide my husband's contract though. We leased about a month after we arrived (this summer). It might just depend on the dealership, we went to Volvo in Thalwil.

Ah, I delete my PMs rather than keep them and have the brain of a goldfish...!

You managed to find the shopping centre, newly-built, in Lachen? It's between your present location (I assume you're in the main building near Sara's office) and the station - you could walk there but for other things, you probably do want a car.

Would that walk help you, for example, in using rented cars when you need?

I would lend you my car but we need it in case our bump arrives early - plus it's only got one EasyFix base installed right now....!

claudia, it really doesnt hurt to give all the dealers a call now re leasing, and explaining your situation. You might hit gold. Good luck and congratulations again.

Re: Has anyone ever... leased a car with only an L Permit?

Thanks summerrain - just called the Volvo Thalwil dealer and the lady there (who spoke perfect English - fab) said leasing would be no problem as long as we could prove that we had a permanent place of residence and bring whatever paperwork we had from the Gemeinde.

Husband's response? What happens if we want to move back to the UK before the lease is up? Guess I need to look into that bit....

Re: Has anyone ever... leased a car with only an L Permit?

options if you move back:
1. pass on car and lease to someone else
2. take the hit
3. get a cheaper vehicle which would reduce 2. above
4. get a more expensive vehicle which would be desired

your husband's either Victor Meldew or wants so much to be Shaggy

One thing to do when you go to get prices, ask if your husband's company gets a discount - we got 10-14% off depending on the dealership.

Re: Has anyone ever... leased a car with only an L Permit?

Sorry for radio silence and thanks for the extra replies. We were airlifted by Rega helicopter on Wednesday and I'm now in St Gallen hospital........ grrreeeeeaaaat!!! Actually it's not too bad but now a 3-hour round trip for Victor Meldrew, er I mean my husband, to come and visit.

Boxman especially - thanks for the tips and for the PM. We've decided to look into financing this week, see where we get on that, and then look for a car afterwards. I think that perhaps because we don't know how long we're going to be here and don't want to get stung for too much $$$$ if we decide to leave, we might look into instalments/finance/just paying cash rather than going down the leasing route.

Back to cooking these babies - 33 weeks tomorrow.... every day counts!

Re: Has anyone ever... leased a car with only an L Permit?

I'd suggest that your husband checks with his HR department at work about any possible discounts. We have an agreement with a few local dealers who give up to 15% off (similar to a fleet discount) but it requires a special form from HR.
BTW I also leased on an L permit when I first got here, but I see you've already struck gold with a good local dealer.

Good luck with the twins!!
