Best way to travel from Zurich to South of France (Perpignan)

Hi, I've been looking around to see what's the best possible and cheapest way to travel to Perpignan in the south of france during the Christmas break.
I have a 1/2abo & Track 7 (free travel after 7pm) on SBB and hope to make best use of that,
The plan so far is take a train from Zurich at 19:00~ and stay in Geneva or Lausanne that night, then Geneva vi Lyon to Perpignan, this works out about 95CHF to 150CHF on www.tgv-europe.ch each way and takes about 5hrs.

Flying isn't that easy as you have to make connecting flights + works out about 165EUR from Zurich to Lyon direct and Zurich to Perpignan indirectly 400EUR's

So travelling by train takes a bit longer, but end's up cheaper at, however would be nice to see i can get abit more value

Any ideas welcome

The night train from Zurich to Barcelona will leave Z-town at 19:27 and get you in Perpignan at 6:14 am. I don't know the price, but it will save you the cost of a hotel, and there are no changes. You can do the reverse for the return journey, or take a day train for a change of scenery.

Of course, if the SNCF decide to strike during your trip you're screwed, but that's just the way they do things over there...

HM

PS-currently the website says this service only runs until Dec. 11th, so you'll need to check at the station to see if this train is still running under the new schedules.

I've taken the Barcelona night train before, there are reclining seats which you could sleep in, or you could book a shared compartment.

The night train isn't bad (at least it wasn't when I was younger). Have you considered driving? I don't know what your plans are down there but it's a pretty good area to have a car in to explore. Kind of a long day of driving though (~8 hours).

You also might look into finding a cheapish flight to Barcelona and then work your way back up there either with car (2 hours) or train.
