any advices for buying an second hand car, especially in Lausanne?

I've been in Lausanne for several months. I wanna buy a second hand family car. But i don't know what's the procedure here?
For example, where i could got the information about the sales?

How can i check the car if i don't know much about cars? Is there any garages or agencies could offer such service?

What's the paper works i should do after i bought the car?

Thanks for any information about the above questions in advance!

In the process of getting one right now.

From Nyon. still waiting for it.

They pretty much do everything for you. I just have to do the follow up cause my sales person is the idiot.

DO NOT LET THEM KNOW YOU KNOW NOTHING BOUT CARS. cause they will sell you the one they want to get rid off. to get it checked by another garage....money gets you everything, or get a friend that does know something to come with.

mostly when you go to a reputable garage the cars are in well working order.

Also make sure they offer a good warranty.
( I got 2 years on a 2004)

remember not to cheap out. these are swiss cars with likely much mountain miles.....= beating on the engine.

Re: any advices for buying an second hand car, especially in Lausanne?

mine was in the middle 20's
they charged an extra 500 for all the paperwork and setting it in order.

Insurance will be around 1800 a year and tax about 800

Diesel cost no idea how much it will be but im guessing 2-4 k a year and then probably 1000 in maintenance

Its a jeep grand cherokee with almost 90 k on it. VERY good deal considering the car new is over 70 k.

You do need to change your license within a year and you need to be registered in the commune

Cool! It's really a good deal!
But does your insurance cover everything? I heard the insurance is below 1k per year if you just cover the basic...

Re: any advices for buying an second hand car, especially in Lausanne?

it is around something like that

However keep in mind that when you buy a car for that much money (to me it is since im a recent graduate so I had to pull a loan in Belgium...and i do not yet make that much a month) I cannot afford to have anything happen to it.....so I rather pay a little more every month and have ease of mind, specially since i dont have a garage...

thx for your advice! Yes, paying a little more gains a lot, especially for less known about cars.

Re: any advices for buying an second hand car, especially in Lausanne?

Ok... here we go:
- You will find tons on information on the procedures or tips on good garages in your region through the search function.
- You will find a great amount of 2nd hand cars on
- www.autoscout.ch
Do not expect to negotiate a lot below the stated prices here, so the websites do give a good impression of the market.
