Whats the best 4WD available in Switzerland

Hi

I should probably pre-empt any groans with "I'm femail and don't know much about cars" so guys in the know - please forgive me

We are in the process of relocating from the UK to Zurich. We are looking for a 4WD car with 5 (7 would be nice though) seats. We are very lucky in that his company are going to lease it for us but here is my problem...

Their recommendation was a BMW X5 (because thats what the rest of them have so they are on a good deal with BMW) - sounds great I hear you say!! - they are going to ship to Switzerland from the US.

Sorry but I think this is madness - what kind of carbon footprint will that add to my guilt complex?

So I have kicked up a stink and said I'd research it myself but I'm having trouble - my German is very limited and I can't make head nor tail of it.

SO CAR GURU'S.... what 4WD's are made in Europe and available easily in Switzerland or am I mad and should I just go with the flow?

You're mad. (sorry but you asked !)

Don't worry about Co2 cost of shipping the car, how much Co2 do you think it costs to ship the oil the car will burn during its life ?

+1 to this.

If you are indeed so much concerned about CO2, you shouldn't be opting for a powerful, oil drinking "SUV" but a very fuel efficient/ hybrid sedan.

you know hybrids have a huge carbon footprint, right?

those batteries are not exactly clean, long lasting, or efficient and your always lugging aroung a ton of batteries if you use them or not.

Re: Whats the best 4WD available in Switzerland

To be fair, I think the company is being mad to ship from the US - surely it would be easier to buy here?!?

I realise that the X5 is put together in the US, but buy it here, as if you buy in the States then ship over you'll have to jump through all the legal hoops to get your car "roadworthy" here.

No, no, hybrids are clean, they never polute - that's what all the politicians, beardies and film starts tell us, so it must be true

We have a Land Rover Disco 3 (LR3 to you) - good car, though people have had bad experiences.

I second this. When my kids were younger, we had a Landcruiser and it served us very well.

X5 and SUV's of this size or larger are not getting very popular and in fact not being seen favorably...they are too big for CH and even Germany...I went for a A4 diesel with quattro engine...yes...I know you need more space...consider kombi's (wagon's in US)..

Saying you are worried about carbon footprint as you choose your 7 passenger 4x4 SUV is much like ordering a diet coke to go with your Double bacon cheeseburger because you want to watch your weight. It just doesn't work that way.

Ask yourself if you really need a 4x4 vehicle. If you are like 95% of the people that live in Switzerland, you only think you need one. Most people that do not live in a rural setting in the mountains get by fine with a two wheel drive wagon or sedan with good snow tires.

Well in that case, a Unimog is what you need, more seats then you'll ever need.

Re: Whats the best 4WD available in Switzerland

Question is do you need a 4wd to offload or for tarmac....

Defender and Cruiser great off road not so comfortable on it, X5 great on road but crap off it.

I have a Lexus RX (i know) - i like it but its crap on the snow or any thing other than tarmac!

Remember the CO2 footprint is much greater buying a new car than it is an old one.

Re: Whats the best 4WD available in Switzerland

I am a woman and have actually just been researching cars so here goes

BMX X5, Audi Q7, Volvo X90 = are very big cars and trying to park them in carparks is a nightmare, I test drove all of these and whilst they are great out on the highway with little road noise, a nightmare to park in the small carparks that are around Lausanne

Audi Q5,BMW X3 Volvo X70 = all good compact cars but little room in the back seat area

Audi A6 or A5 quartto = excellent cars lots of room and great in the snow and on the highway

If you would consider a smaller car look at a Suburu or a Toyota Rav 4

In the end my husband and I decided to keep our audi S6.....great car for all purposes...

I think this answer I'm quoting here is perfect for you.
I have only ever driven 4WD's my whole life, and since I moved to Switzerland I don't see the point unless you are rural (I was rural in Australia).
You are best to first decide what you need a car for? Then choose. Don't get anything that has a dual purpose or it will be useless for both.
I also wouldn't be worried about a 'Carbon footprint' if you are going to buy a big car. I'm assuming you have a family and kids so you need this to be practical.
If you were truly worried about a carbon footprint you should choose something like a family van, but if you are filthy stinking rich and need something more aesthetic, stick with your BMW X5.
If it is a 4WD you want, go for Toyota....... resale, maintenance costs, reliability, can't beat it..... What you would need it for I'll never know.
Choose Diesel if you can, the hills here will kill you with fuel otherwise with a car that size.
Whatever you choose good luck, but If I can offer one more piece of advice..... go to a website and compare the resale value of the same model of whatever you are going to choose 3-5 YEARS older. The cars that are cheap usually have heaps of issues and people can't get rid of them fast enough. People tend to hold onto good cars hence the high price. I know your company is paying for this, but it is your inconvenience when things go wrong.

Re: Whats the best 4WD available in Switzerland

Thank you all for your input.

I know cars in general aren't "green" but I was just trying not to make it so ridiculous, Oh and the company wont lease a 2nd hand car so I'm a bit limited with my choices.

As I said thank you all

If you want a 4x4 then jolly well get a 4x4! they come in very handy in the winter when you go skiing, as some resorts will make you park at the bottom of the mountain and catch the bus up if you don't have a 4x4. Not fun lugging all your gear into a crowded post bus. The landcruiser was great when people came to visit, 8 seats meant everyone would fit in 1 car, and in comfort.

Also a god send for those trips to ikea, seats down and there was nothing that wouldn't fit in the back.

Re: Whats the best 4WD available in Switzerland

I'd go for an Audi all road, Fantastic cars designed for the snow and skiing. Extreme amount of room and it comes with a fantastic 3 litre diesel. Basically an A6 with 4x4, air suspension and a very nice interior. Truthfully can't imagine a single other vehicle on the market which would suit your needs better.

Also it's built right next door in Germany.
