Train from Basel to Paris

I've checked SBB online for a weekend in March or April and the ticket is around 290CHF. Seems very expensive. If I say I have a Halbtax the price doesn't change.

Thinking I was being out-smarted by a website I got my revenge and selected Liestal as my start point instead of Basel SBB, because I know that part of Basel SBB is owned by France so maybe that's why the Halbtax didn't give a discount. Made no difference (well, OK, selecting Halbtax knocked 0.30CHF from the price). What gives?

Have you tried booking from Mulhouse? Sometimes you can get better deals on national vs. international trips.

Correct you can usually get it cheaper. The other thing is to try and make sure your train is leaving from the "French part" of the SBB.

Have you tried booking via tgv.com? Make sure you select France as your location...

Re: Train from Basel to Paris

If you are travelling by TGV to Paris then the half tax card will not give you a discount outside of Switzerland... See this thread where there should be a link to the TGV Lyria site and a PDF with all the prices.

Unfortunately you will pay more for travelling with the TGV which is considered a premium fast train and therefore more expensive! Unless they have a special offer on for the days you are travelling you will be subject to the set fare (see link to above thread). If you are taking the regional slow trains on the other hand, you may save some money but it will take much longer to get to Paris. Have you considered flying as it's sometimes cheaper to fly to Paris than take the train.

Re: Train from Basel to Paris

I had a French colleague who used to commute from Basel > Paris every weekend. When I asked him for tips on how to get the best fares he told me about a French website where people can exchange/sell their train tickets. I'll be damned if I can remember its name though

Re: Train from Basel to Paris

Thanks for all the tips! Living near the border one of the main reasons I bought the Halbtax was for the 25% off journeys into other countries.

I'm off to Stuttgart this weekend and booking via SBB with the Halbtax (which did give a 25% discount) costs the same as booking via bahn.de without.

And now I find out the TGV to Paris doesn't count, either. Damn. I'll check through the posts above and come back with my best price.

I must start staying in Switzerland and getting the 50% discount

Re: Train from Basel to Paris

Don't fly to Paris. I had to do a weekly commute there a few years ago, and it didn't react well with my spine. I find the No 34 bus has more comfortable seats. ( Takes longer to get to Paris though ).

Re: Train from Basel to Paris

It is not the direct route, but cheaper:
From Basel(Bad BF) via Karlsruhe(change trains there) departing on the 27 Th of march at 06:16
arriving at paris at 10:34, return : departing at paris on the march 28 th
at 17:24, arrive in basel (bad bf) at 22:43

Price is around 149 €(is you got a bahncard 25 with rail plus it will be 111 €)
The bahncard 25 costs around 55 €, valid for one year)
149 €=218 CHF; 111 € = 162 CHF

When you have the halbtax already , i think you will get the rail plus discount for Germany and France as well

Re: Train from Basel to Paris

Check out the airfrance website. I have recently look up ticket from Zurich for May, and they offer around 185chf(the ticket actually only costs 18chf, the rest is taxes) which is not much more than TGV if not cheaper. The schedule is far better than the TGV.

Re: Train from Basel to Paris

Have you tried going directly to the SBB office in the train station to ask? I went for a ticket over Christmas and was able to get one for 220 CHF round trip (from Basel) - which included the reservation prices. My boyfriend often has to travel Basel-Paris for his job and we just bought another ticket for next week for 214 CHF round trip. Perhaps they have access to a certain number of seats if you buy it there directly?
(We also each have a GA, but I think that gets the same discount as a halbtax for this kind of thing - somebody please correct me if I'm wrong)

I know that this thread is 2 years old, but please humor me...I'm trying to find lowest price options for train tickets from Basel to Paris and have been searching all over. However, I can't find the website where I book a ticket with an itinerary like the one above. Everything I can find (on http://www.tgv-europe.ch, http://www.sbb.ch, or http://www.bahn.de) books a TGV train that is very expensive and usually direct. Is there another way or website I should be using to book this type of itinerary? I'll gladly trade an hour for a cheaper ticket, if it's possible. Thanks!

On www.bahn.de you can also put in a via. So if you do a Basel to Paris via Karlsruhe at approx the times indicated (and assuming the train times haven't changed) it should at least show the said train.

Re: Train from Basel to Paris

I've found tgv-europe.com generally only looks for direct trains by default. If you haven't seen this, this could maybe find you cheaper seats with a quick stop in mulhouse of strassbourg required.

Otherwise if your not picky about the time of year be patient and wait for their special offers. I think you just missed the last ones. 2 years ago I got a return from Basel-Paris for around 70 Fr for in June
