Baden/Wettingen (Schartenstrasse) "Verbot für Motorwagen"

This is one of those signs that changes and if you get caught driving in the area during the forbidden times, the fine is 100 chf.
They've got a camera installed, so be careful.

Amazing, We just got busted a couple weeks back on a Sunday. I had no idea. 100 CHF going to a restaurant and another 100 on the way back. I'll refrain from writing what truly needs to be written....

Fine from police Baden

Dear All,

I just received 2 fines from the Baden Polizei today by post. I was driving from Wettingen to Baden and passing by Schartenstrasse I got flashed there by a camera. I realized afterwards that there is a signal which is changing from 8pm onwards: Forbidden to entry. I got fined for not respecting that signal.

I also red in the net that many people got flashed there and many complained, but police from Baden did not do anything about the complaints and the people ended up paying their fines.

Please see details in:

http://www.limmattalerzeitung.ch/aar...hlen-126027407

Do you know something about that in your personal experience in this area?

I received 2 fines. the dates were 01.09 and another one on 02.09. both after 20h.

I have to pay now 200 CHF (100 CHF each) within 30 days. I'm planning to write them a letter to tell them that I am new here, and to charge me just once and not 2 times. Do you think they can accept? any suggestions welcome.

Sorry to say, not a chance. Being new makes no difference to seeing the sign, does it. The sign is new for the locals too? I feel for you, but...

If you went past the sign twice, then two fines it is - no deals available.

Argue a case when you're in the wrong and expect to pay more.

Pay up, and next time be more vigilant or less disregarding.

Me, too! On that same street. The sign is easy to miss, and there is so much info on it, one would have to block that crazy-winding intersection for a short while to read it all.

If I were you I would fight it, melvinkoll. Go in person and ask as nicely as you possibly can. I did that once for my in-laws in Vancouver, and it worked. Of course, you never know until you ask.

That's similar story which happened to me several years ago in exact same spot. Partially due to me being a newbee to this area where we just moved in and partially by my sheer ignorance without realizing the rules at the first place. I was flashed several times on Schartenstrasse. It's a very profitable place which skins you alive!

What you need to do is take all the fines to police department in Baden (cannot remember the street name now but it's somewhere close by Pickwick's Pub). Explain and plead with them that you are new to this district and repeated the same mistake over and over again without even realizing it and that next time you'll pay attention and be more careful. Most likely they will ask you to write a registered letter addressed to local PD and hopefully they will reduce the amount of fines. They did reduce mine by count of two

Re: Baden/Wettingen (Schartenstrasse) "Verbot für Motorwagen"

Hello, Yes I had the same fine sequence about 1.5 years ago when my then girlfriend visited me with her car (I live in Ennetbaden). We went for Dinner at the Schloss Schartenfels and the two tickets (occurring within 3 hours of each other) arrived via post to her Geneva address. The signage is elusive in my opinion and changes. I just paid the 200 CHF as I didnt have time to figure out to whom to complain. Dave

Re: Baden/Wettingen (Schartenstrasse) "Verbot für Motorwagen"

Now that post#5 has been tagged onto an existing thread (originally a separate thread), and in light of some of the subsequent posts, it appears that this is set up purely as a 'cash cow' to generate income (road restriction sign plus camera).

Unfortunately the link posted in post#5 shows for a second and then blanks out, so for anyone without local knowledge, it is difficult to ascertain the exact situation.

So - when approaching the sign during prohibited hours, is an alternative route available, or is it a case of jamming on brakes and doing a U-turn?

Re: Baden/Wettingen (Schartenstrasse) "Verbot für Motorwagen"

I'm not sure why the road is restricted after 8 on most days and all day sundays. Its basically a rat run that cuts out the traffic lights at the top leading to wettingerstrasse / limmat bridge. Not even that residential on that part of Schartenstrasse..the more residential part is not included in the zone.

They must be making a very pretty penny on it at the moment with the road works at schulhaus platz

Agree with that.

Learn very quickly that in SUI one needs to pay special attention to road rules. There are heaps of threads in EF pretty much identical to this.

I got flashed as a result of a moving sign. Just learn from your misstakes and move on.

Also those in Basel need to be aware that there are now car mounted cameras that the police are moving around. Thats what got me in Bottmingen.

That's exactly the case, only thing is you can't do a u-turn if you went far enough, and have to proceed therefore breaking the law. A couple of screenshots from google. The sign in question is missing here, but you can see them in this article (in German, have no idea if pro or con).

Re: Baden/Wettingen (Schartenstrasse) "Verbot für Motorwagen"

Is there anyone in the Baden area who has not found out about this restriction the hard way?

I agree the problem is the sheer amount of information on the sign which makes it confusing. Now I know about it, it's obvious - when the light flashes you don't go down there. But a flashing yellow light does not normally mean "no entry" but "proceed with caution".

And yes TiMow, I am a very regular U turner as twice a week I go that way at about 8pm and sometimes the light is flashing just slightly before 8.

I actually think it causes traffic chaos on a Sunday when the queue for the traffic lights backs all the way past Falsenegg and blocks the roundabout by the museum, because everyone has to go via the lights.

So good luck with that Melvinkoll, but I'm afraid I don't hold out much hope.

I'm a U-turner at the opposite end of the road Funnybone - from the side you show there you just follow the flow of the main road to the traffic lights and turn left at the lights.

I didn't realize there is also a flashing light to signal "no entry"...which I would interpret as "proceed with caution" anyway.

Seems to me the obvious solution would just be to avoid ever going to Aargau. If the majority of Switzerland has already figured out that AG is something to be glanced at while your train speeds through, surely the rest of you should figure it out as well.

Hi All,

I wrote a polite letter to the Baden police and I got the reply just 2 days ago and it worked! They have cancelled my second fine. So in total I just have to pay one fine of 100CHF.

Nothing is impossible.
