Importing a car whilst already a resident for x years?

When I moved to Switzerland five years ago, I brought my car (from Italy) with me. I went through the normal procedure and found it neither too onerous nor expensive. I had owned the car for more than six months so the tax was not levied.

Now five years later I am considering buying another car (from the Czech Republic this time).

At the time I was under the impression that I was able to bring my car into Switzerland from Italy because I was a new resident. My question is whether exactly the same applies to me after five years regarding importing my car or is it only for new residents.

Also, if I buy it and insure it in Czech Republic for six months, and then bring it into Switzerland, is that also possible and will I then escape the tax? From what I can see the total cost burden of the tax and import fees is about 15 percent of purchase price.

I wonder if anyone who has done this whilst resident, and not when first arriving, has any input or even better experiences.

Best wishes

Simon

I would say you have to go through the same situation as you did with your Italian car plus the Swiss VAT is 7.6% and the import tax is 4%.

The rule of not paying the 7.6% and 4% only applies when you first arrive to Switzerland.

Hi,
Just a note - if You buy a car in Czech Republic from a dealer (not from a private person), then you should be able to get the Czech VAT back when You export it to Switzerland. It's certainly more than 20%, so actually this would even out the Swiss VAT and customs.

you can only import tax free if the items are being imported due to change of domicile and you have owned them at least 6 months prior to moving. So no, this tax excemption does not apply to any new cars you want to buy while already resident in Switzerland.

That makes no sence.

Say I moved her 10 years ago and I left my oldtimer or whichever car in a different country....Now financialy I can import it. As the car has been at my adress in the country the whole time. Meaning you kept 2 adresses you should eb able to import it no?

That's what the law says:

An immigrant's household effects are admitted duty-free. The household effects must be imported close to the time when the transfer of domicile occurs, generally in 18 months. I asked the Customs and they said that they will calculate it from the date of entry as stated on your permit.

You can of course try to claim that you are only now transferring the domicile but I'm not sure how this would work if you have in fact been living and working in Switzerland for 10 years..

There is an option to import a car tax free if you have been a resident of Switzerland but worked abroad for at least one year witough giving up the Swiss domicile and used the car there at least 6 months, but in this case you would actually have to show that you were studying and working abroad for a year.
