I just received my first speeding offence after many years of driving !!!!!

I got charged for 2 km !.... Apparently i was caught on film doing 55km in a 50km Bellerivestrasse 8008. They gave me a margin of 3km FREE.

Have these guys not got anything better to do??? ...... I thought it was a 60km road silly me. I hope i was looking my best! Next time i will keep my eyes fixed on my speedometer and not the road ahead so i don't offend again.
Fixed that for you .

Traffic fine given by Zurich Police

I have been here too long. I am less shocked by the fine, or by the seriousness of the offence.

The white line ... the solid white line, is like a traffic light. It is called the security or safety line. It is there to warn you that if you cross it in this place there is a risk - based on visibility or stats or something, of cars/people flying around the corner at you and getting killed/ killing you. You probably didn't see the cop because of that lack of visibility. Crossing the white line is considered something equivalent to dangerous driving here.

Ever been to Rome? Stopping at a red light would appear to be optional. In Switzerland it is not optional to stop at a red light, nor is it optional to stay on your side of the road on a stretch where they considered it necessary to paint a solid white line for safety reasons. Neither is considered a minor traffic offence here ... it is considered dangerous.

A friend hung a Uey (that feels like an australianism... is it? )over a white line in Seestrasse Thalwil ZH years ago, in a car, and was fined based on his income - thousands.

Re: Traffic fine given by Zurich Police

Just received a letter from Avis that a rental car I drove 6 weeks ago performed a "driving violation" in Zurich. Day 2 in Switzerland. I only drove to Zurich from Germany and parked up (underground parkplatz) on the Saturday and drove back on the Sunday (violation day) with no touring at all. No indication what the offence was. To be notified later. Racked my brains and I can't think what I've done wrong.

20 years of very frequent driving in several countries (250,000 to 300,000 miles). Never ever had any penalty or warning whatsoever.

Given the experience of other posters I surmise that this is another of the mounting hidden taxes I'm encountering in "low tax" Switzerland.

Re: Traffic fine given by Zurich Police

Hi all,
Sorry for exhuming such an old thread.

Today something similar to what described into this thread happened to me as well.
I was coming from the A3 with my scooter, and considering the traffic and the cars that kept changing lane suddenly, I thought was safer to use the underpass to skip the queue.
The police was there and they took my details.
I must say that the police officer was super-kind and suggested for next time to go deeper into parking where there is a designated area for U-turn some 50 meters after.

My fault. I did a mistake and I have to pay for it.

Now I went through all the thread and it looked there was someone who did my SAME EXACT mistake. Pete_R did something similar but not same thing.

Would this someone be so kind to let me know how much the fine will be and how long it will take to reach my mailbox?

Thanks a lot
ciao
ale

Of course I refer to the SihlCity underpass.
Somehow I cannot edit my post to add this info.

ah - they're shit-hot on that spot (said the nun to the bishop).

600 francs fine or thereabouts. You should have just gone up the parking lane on the right hand side....

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your fine, here is the post where I put the detail of the fine (I think it took just under 3 months to arrive in the post):

Thanks for all the replies.

I finally got the fine this week - so here is the detail as promised.

Fine (Busse) 250CHF
+ Court? Fees (Spruchgebuhr) 260CHF
+ Admin Fees (Scheib- und Zustellgebuhren) 18CHF
= 528CHF

It was for crossing a white line (Uberfahrens der sicherheitslinie als lenker ...).

Re: Traffic fine given by Zurich Police

alanzed - this 600 CHF would be the lowest fine I believe and if you work and earn some good money they will probably fine you based on your salary (more than 600 CHF)

My wife had something similar and she was unemployed at that time and the fine was 600 CHF.

Re: Traffic fine given by Zurich Police

Odd you all say this with Sihlcity,

I enter the slip road everyday twice, once from the south entrance to drop my GF off at the P&R lift then drive out continuing in the same direction to drive up to Uetlihof and later to pick her up.

I have done this now for a year and never once seen a police car

It shows the kanton is doing its best to scrounge as much money as it can. I arrived into Zurich airport on Sunday evening and I have never seen so many traffic police before. Even the tinest infringement will land you an on the spot fine. Be careful folks...

I doubt that very much, as I said I have been doing this twice a day for a year and have a good reason to do it, it might take them sometimes a long while to make a judgement but there are laws regarding how long they have to advise you of their intention to prosecute

Everyone does that U-ey outside Sihl city. Sign of poor road design.
or a well designed fine collecting feature.

i wish stadt zurich would let me design a few roads. i'd have a dual carriage way with a solid line down the middle. if you take the wrong side, you end up on a one way street ending at a T-Junction with a no-left turn and a no-right turn sign and police cars on both side streets to cover whichever direction you choose

Since we arrived we have racked up 4 fines each..hubby and I. Mainly for slightly over the speed limit.

On the whole I find them hard to avoid even though I drive much slower than in the UK!!

The formula is pretty simple. Just make sure that:

Kidding aside, I find that it's actually quite tough to speed in Switzerland as traffic generally flows at the speed limit +/- 10km/h. It's rare to find yourself caught up in really fast-moving traffic.
