Re: Travel to Milan

Be aware that you can also Click&Rail this journey for 49 or 79Fr. The offer is from the Ticket Shop online, and is bookable only a week in advance.

Is that offer cheaper with a GA?

Re: Travel to Milan

If you buy the ticket with the Italian rail company <trenitalia> from the border town of Chiasso to Milano it will cost you 14 euro 1st class and 11 euro 2nd class. Most Italians in my company do it like this when they travel home, according to them, the ticket with SBB from the border to Milano is way more expensive than the ticket with Trenitalia.
Most of them travel with two tickets, one from SBB to Chiasso and the other with Trenitalia from Chiasso to Milano.

Re: Travel to Milan

In the spirit of you deciding between a GA and car in another thread I should add that it costs 40 chfs return, Zurich - Milan, in fuel in the new Golf 1.4 TSFSI on cruise control at 100kph

I don't think so, but check their site to be sure. For those of us without a GA, it's certainly a good deal, especially considering how you can travel from Basel almost to Croatia with this ticket.

The offer is called SmartPrice Ticket. You should by the SmartPrice Ticket 14 or 7 days before departure. I am using this offer very often. From Milan to Lausanne one way ticket costs 19 Euro

I asked SBB about this, and they said they if I did that, I would have to switch trains in Chiasso and could not use two different tickets on the same train!

If they want to be awkward, all you would need to do is step off and straight back onto the same train when it gets to Chiasso. However surely the easiest way would be to only show the ticket to Chiasso and when asked later on the journey to show the valid ticket from Chiasso to Milan.

I do this trip quite often, and it costs me 30chf return with a GA. I also have a rail plus (for under 26) which knocks off 2 / 3 chfs, so without the rail plus it shouldn't cost more than 33chf.

something that just came to mind is that when you buy a ticket to Milan with SBB, they also sell you a seat reservation. Is it possible to buy a seat reservation only to Chiasso with a GA?

Using the link posted above - The SBB web site says
"Buy your tickets to Italy or obtain further information online, at the station, over the phone from Rail Service 0900 300 300 (CHF 1.19/min.), or at travel agencies selling railway tickets."
