Medion gopal review

Sods law the gps in my car broke, what was so good about it was it had built in tmc (traffic information that re-routes you if there are problems on your route).

As luck would have it Aldi where selling the Medion p4440 gps with tmc all this week, and its way cheaper then the tomtom or garmin models with similar features. Its based on windows ce so nice and easy to change the software.

So off I went and bought it, first impressions where good, nice looking device, very apple like design, 2gb of inbuilt storage, bluetooth, tmc, finger print reader !?!?! etc, only issue is the maps where from 2007 but there was a dvd with 2009 maps on.

Installed the gopal assist software and thats where the issue started, its terrible, if checks for updates on install, found some and started to install them but because its running it needs to shut itself down, which shuts the install down, clever eh?

got round that issue by uninstalling the sw while it was checking, then onto the next issue, it couldn't upgrade the maps because there wasn't enough space on the device, even though the filenames of the new maps where the same as the old, it wasn't smart enough to realise replacing the files wouldn't take up much space, it also uses active sync, the slowest and most buggy way to communicate with anything, after about 3 hours I gave up and copied the files by hand.

Next, the show stopper, its poi and speed camera warning, you have to install a separate app from there website to get speed camera warnings, and PAY for the database (even though its listed as a feature on the box) the app seemed to install but just doesn't work?? lots of posts on the internet about it, no cure that I could find. You also cannot search for poi, only poi near you, again what use is that, say I want to goto europa park, I have no idea where in germany that is, I just want to search the poi for europa park and go, not look up the country and town, browse the map and hit poi near here!!!

Its a real shame because the interface is really nice and simple, if you pair your phone to it and hit a poi on the map it will give you the option to call them and everything is nicely integrated (mp3 player etc) so you don't have to mess around closing the satnav etc, just hit an icon to show the mp3 player do what you need to do and hit the map icon again.

I got so frustrated with it in the end I just installed igo8 on it, sorted, speed cameras and tmc and nice uptodate maps.

So in summary, A nice gps as long as you just want to use it out of the box, and have some tech knowledge, there is no way on earth my parents (for example) would be able to update the maps with its simple (ha ha ha) user friendly (lol) gopal assist software.

Oh and the manual is no help at all.

it comes in around 100chf cheaper then the equivalent tomtom with the same features (tomtom has a much smaller screen tho)

Thanks for the review bigblue2

I love the fact that you had to take some many detours to get the satnav working

Re: Medion gopal review

Aldi has got a special on the Medion E4450 for 150Fr (which seems to be the same, or very similar to the E4445). Anyone got an E-series one? I'm hoping they've improved since bigblue2 got his.

Do you still have it? Still annoyed with it?

I do, and it still has igo on it

just be really really careful that the maps are upto date, if they aren't then you have to pay to download the latest even though you just bought the thing!! even tomtom doesn't have the cheek to do that!!

Bloody hell, you're quick!

(That's what she said - Ouchboy)

I think it comes with a free upgrade voucher. I'm not totally sure as Aldi Switzerland uses some crazy language which isn't English! The cheek. Hopefully the device has EN on it.

I don't kow what "igo" is. I'll do some googling.

igo is just another gps program that is widely used on windowsce based gps systems, its also very easy to find on the net
has lots of features, and is skinable.

Re: Medion gopal review

Thanks for that. I think the e4450 runs Win CE 6. However, assuming igo isn't free it seems silly to spend 150Fr on this just to replace the software when I could buy a Nuvi and use it out of the box.

Funny (!) thing is, I don't even have a car. I want to use it when cycling mainly, and when hiring cars.
