customs and registration costs importing new motorcycle from US?

Hello,

I am curious how much it would cost to just pay customs and directly register a new motorcycle imported from US. Anyone knows? I will also need to find out about transportation costs ...

I am thinking of buying the new Fat Bob 2010 CVO that costs 25K USD in US and exactly the same model costs roughly 40K CHF in Switzerland ... as usual the exaggeratedly inflated prices while the exchange rate is NOT that bad!

Are there any issues to be aware of? warranty etc? I would pay it cash so I do not care about leasing or so

Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
TapiroLee

Re: customs and registration costs importing new motorcycle from US?

Customs duties: Motorcycles pay a set duty of 37 Swiss francs

Consumption tax @ 4% of the vehicle's value

8% MwsT

So, 37 CHF plus 1000 plus 2000 = 3037

But, the above is assuming you have an EU certificate for it which you'd need to arrange in the USA. This means a different model to the 25K one - i.e. one that HD has prepped for Europe, not the USA. These are more expensive as your local HD dealer will tell you.

Also, consider warranty and after sales service.

Dude,
a) don't buy a new one. buying a new bike for export, esp an HD which are hugely overpriced and not very good value for money is just plain stupid (i'm not saying your choice of bikes is stupid, just it doesn't make much sense monetarily). your warranty is also pretty much useless here.
b) better if you get a 2009 model that's already plated because you won't pay tax on it here (I just imported an '08 Triumph last year from the US. It was very low mileage and they didn't nail me for import tax at all because as far as they were concerned it's 'first registration' was more than six months prior to my buying it from the previous owner).
c) if your state has use taxes on the purchase of used vehicles, you might be able to avoid those by getting it 'gifted' to you by the previous owner. this is what I did. Ended up saving several hundred dollars on that end and didn't pay taxes on it on this end).
d) I didn't have to do anything to get my Triumph approved since it already has yellow signal lights and has a speedo that shows kilometers.
e) If there's anything that you want on the bike before you bring it, put it ON THE BIKE there. Once you get it here, if it's not OEM you need to get approval and certification and it's a pain.

You were lucky - the law is that you must have owned it for 6 months prior to importing.

I inquired about buying a new HD from a dealership in California while on vacation some years ago and they told me they can't legally sell new bikes for export.

I was wondering if I got lucky. I bought it at the end of May and we moved here in the middle of August but the bike didn't show up until the first week of November.

I wonder if you asked again now that the market for HD bikes has tanked if you'd get the same answer...
Ask them next time how they can legally sell straight pipes that violate most cities' sound ordinances.

The legality is most likely with the licensing agreement the home office has with the dealership which probably limits sales within the States. Regional dealerships exporting bikes would put them in direct competition with HD's own export business.

While I agree with you I have a few problems with buying second hand in US:

a) Buying second hand is not only a big risk but also a compromise ... you don't get exactly what you wanted in the first place. This is a bummer at least for me ... maybe you save 5K but at the end you paid say 15K for something you don't completely like ... so you wasted 15K

b) all the hassle to coordinate everything ... at the end it seems that the effective saving potential is around 5K ... not that much considering the risks and hassle.

c) if you search for Fat Bob second hand you wont find almost any e.g. motoscout24 has two listings only and the prices are on the same region as of buying a brand new Fat Bob 2010 ... makes no sense.

d) And finally how about the day you get your new toy totally unspoiled and ready for you exactly as you wanted it hehe ... the smell to brand newwy bellezzaaaaa!

AFAIK there were produced around of 1500 Fat Bob CVO worldwide only ... so it is like buying a jewel also looking at the second hand prices it is really so ...

Thank you for your hints ... I do not feel so bad anymore buying it in CH.

Cheers,
TapiroLee
