you won't have insurance without a valid US license. you can drive, but if you have an accident, run to the airport and fly back to Zurich immediately.

Another one who does not see sarcasm in the first post and decided to groan for the fun of it.
Do some people get off on giving out groans?

Once you read the other posts you will see that I am not wrong as it did happen to me and I also said that I believed the Swiss licence is valid.

Do you ever thought the cop was wrong . All you had to do is plead not guilty
send the ticked in complet, with the proper explanation .Cops are not the law the court is

It is not the drivers license, which caries the insurance its the car

See my previous post.
I have driven in the US with my licence and hired a car in the US with my Swiss licence, with no problems at all.
No matter how much I tried to explain to officer Donut, he was not accepting it, I have no idea why he would not accept it but I am pretty sure a Swiss licence is valid everywhere.

You really are having trouble understanding this
I know the policeman was wrong, hence the first post had the sarcastic smiley.
See quote above and in bold
It happened a few years ago so I don't expect to get the ticket through

Why do you go accusing me of giving out incorrect information without taking into consideration the sarcasm in the post or asking me to explain?
Are you insinuating that I have given out incorrect information before on a different topic?

Anyway,
I was driving a friends car in LA and stopped for having a break light not working.
The stupid, fat, donut eating officer decided that a Swiss licence was not an international licence, therefore not a valid in the US. He called someone on his phone who confirmed this, I was issued a ticket.

I left 2 days later, never paid the fine and never heard anything afterwards.

This is hard so I will give up after this one.

See the little smiley in the first quote, if you put your mouse over it, it says rolleyes (sarcastic)
That was the sarcastic part meaning it was a sarcastic post.
The next post which did contain the insult and it was an insult was explaining that I knew the policeman was wrong.

Hopefully you get it now

Re: Can I drive in CH with a US license?

I was told at the Police station you can drive with your US license for 1yr but they advise you to get your Swiss license asap as it is cheaper to do so. When you do change from a US to Swiss license they do give you a temp license to use untill your real license shows up in the mail. You even get your US license back too when you recieve your Swiss one. (Atleast I did.)

You can also drive in the US with a Swiss license also. My father In-Law drove and rented a car in Texas. To do this you must have a valid drivers license.

He has also visited many other States and has never had a problem renting a car or driving in the US with a Swiss license.

Hi,

my wife has a Canadian drive license and few years ago got her swiss one.

On the swiss drive license there is the identification number of the Canadian one...

Now we are going shortly back to Canada to visit family and friends and thinking to get her Canadian drive license renew (since it has expired), therefore automatically the swiss one will be ok...

anybody knows if this will work??

thanks,
Aris

p.s.: where I can find more thread about this? thanks
For a Canadian, there is no reason to renew the Canadian license when you visit. The Swiss license is valid in Canada. When you switch to a Swiss one, it replaces the Canadian one.

When/if you return to Canada (permanently), you then take your Swiss license to the same place you would renew your Canadian one and you will get a Canadian one in return for the Swiss one. I checked this before moving here to ensure that I was not going to lose my motorcycle qualification upon return to Canada (I was unsure that it would be recognised here because from what I understand, the testing is much more difficult).

Yes you can for a few months (or possibly 2 years). You must be 18 years of age, hold a valid drivers licence from EU or US or Japan and a few other places.

If you stay here and do not get a valid drivers licence, then you need to take the test again - that is minimum CHF 1000.- and a big hazzle.

You can not go to Zimbabwe and take your exam there, get a licence and expect it to be valid in kantón Zurich.
When I moved here (last October), I was told my US license was valid for one year only. After that year, you are required to get a Swiss license. Also, if you get your license within that year, you will not be required to take the drivers test, but either way you will have to take the eye exam.

Re: Can I drive in CH with a US license?

According to the TCS (for you Americans, this is one of the Swiss equivalents to the AAA, the other is the http://www.acs.ch/) the plain Swiss driving license is enough. A translation or an international permit, which you can get from your Strassenverkehrsamt/Service Auto may help (For Zurich this is CHF 15 and valid 3 years). I never had a problem, but also I never had the opportunity to meet a trooper.

Now lets talk about Japan (FR).

If she has asterisks ********** at 4b. instead of a date it is valid forever and nothing has to be done.

Re: Can I drive in CH with a US license?

You can drive with our licence for one year and then you have to swap it for a Swiss driving licence. If you do not exchange it within the year you have to take another driving test (in French!)

With all the recent converts posting in this thread, I thought this would be a good place to ask: When you converted your US license within the first year, did you have to take the written exam?

I understand that you don't need to take the practical exam, but it's a bit fuzzier on the written (on a PC) exam. This web site seems to imply that US conversion requires the written exam by way of not mentioning it when it says that the practical exam is not required: (FR)

This poster had the same concern, but ultimately didn't have to take it. Although the rules may have changed since 2009, or he may have just gotten lucky:
[Drivers licence] Conversion and questions

If it matters, I'll be doing the conversion at the Lausanne SAN as soon as I get my eye test.

Canton Zug, eye test and complete the application in German. No written rules of the road test or driving test. I was swapping New Jersey for Swiss.

Monday this week I rented a car with my Swiss driving licence in NJ. I have the asterics as no expiry and the car rental place asked me what the date (the issue date) was as I think they were worried the license was expired. Took my explanation that it was an issue date and the license didn't expire at my word. I took insurance from the car hire place as had no clue whether my Swiss car insurance would have applied. Guess no but should find that out for the future.

Re: Can I drive in CH with a US license?

I converted my US license from NC to here in Switzerland (Basel) in the last few months and all I had to do was take a eye test. No questions, no tests of any kind. Nothing. I did not even have to know the road signs! I got my license in the mail about 2 weeks or less later with a bill and my old NC license back too. I think it cost me 75CHF for my license.

Your answer brings up the other question that I have had after reading this forum. Will I be without any driver's license, and thus unable to drive anywhere, for some period of time after I turn in the application and before I receive my Swiss license in the mail?

I haven't been able to find any information on this anywhere in the forums, but have seen several mentions that you receive your Swiss license and original license in the mail.

Re: Can I drive in CH with a US license?

They give you a temporary lisence to use, like a permit. You use that untill your swiss license comes in the mail. I believe it was good for 1 month.
