| | Updating Navigation Maps (Garmin)
Was looking to update the maps on my navi - is now more than a year old, and this time when we were in Italy, it did not recognize a newly-built highway!
Looked online - Garmin does it for CHF 119! Is that a joke? There are now satnav's available for that price. Anybody with experience to share?

Yes.. That is sort of the conclusion I have arrived at. Buy one, use it for a couple of years and then buy another cheaper one. I know it is not very enviromental friendly, but I will use some more low energy light bulbs to compensate | This user would like to thank jako for this useful post: | |

you could also look at buying the maps from another country, my old car had garmin built in, I think I only paid about £40 for a map upgrade sd card from the uk.

I asked the dealer for an update to the built-in navigation system on my Audi and it will be chf 450! This seems like a lot! Is there a way around this? Can I download something specific to the Audi system somewhere, or are the ones you mentioned universal map downloads that can go in any system? Not very good at cars, computers, or maps, so will appreciate any advice. Thank you for the links to the sites already listed above.

depends on the system, if its based on something like a clarion system then your out of luck, one of our cars has a factory fit system that is really a customised clarion, the only way to update that is via the dealer or sending it back to clarion, for the bargain price of 500 euro!!!!!
some of the more popular systems you can find downloads for, but to be honest your better off just buying a cheap tomtom or no make system from ebay for 50chf, then you'll never have to worry about being ripped off again.
iirc some audi's just use a DVD for the maps, in which case you should be able to find a map update on a bit torrent site.
google bit torrent, you'll need to install a bit torrent client, something like bitcomet, then use a torrent search engine, something like isohunt.com, or just google torrent search, try to pick the file with the most seeds and good comments to avoid fake files.

if your inbuilt system uses wince then your in luck and can probably unlock it and install any gps software you want on it, you'll need to google the make and model number of it eg if its an audi gpsxxxx then google
unlock audi gpsxxxx
if its possible someone would have done it and posted a how to
good luck

Thank you all. This will be my project for tomorrow. The thing that has kept me from tackling it is the fear that all of the original data will be lost...fingers crossed!
