Imported vehicles worth less -- how do they know?

I've often read here that imported vehicles are worth less on resale than their Swiss counterparts. Assuming that the car is a European-spec car (not a North American import), how does anyone know that it's an import? Is it noted on the registration document?

From they VIN number is possible find out if the car was not originally set to the Swiss Market.

Re: Imported vehicles worth less -- how do they know?

Is that true? For Porsche, I know that you can tell a North American car from a Rest-of-World car, but there's no ID beyond that.

WPOAAO = American market car
WPOZZZ = RoW market car

But beyond that, there's no way to know where the car was destined.

Even if they can tell which cars were Swiss vs. greater Europe, do people really check this when they buy a car?

Re: Imported vehicles worth less -- how do they know?

If a type of vehicle is officially approved in Switzerland it is assigned a type approval code. That's a 6-character alphanumeric code which is listed in the "Typengenehmigung" field of the car's registration document (Fahrzeugausweis). Cars which haven't been imported by the official importer have the letter "X" instead of the approval code. Therefore it's quite obvious to the educated buyer.

It's a lot easier than that - the date of first registration shows the country of registration and the fact that the vehicle was registered outside Switzerland. Not that that would make much vakue difference to the vehcile unless it was very new.
