importing car from Germany...Possible?

Dear all,

I really hope I to find an answer to my question so please be so kind to find few seconds to reply.

I am trying to understand weather it's possible to buy a new or 2nd hand car in Germany and import the car to switzerland or not ?
It is no secret that cars in Germany, especially german cars type (Audi, Bmw) are cheaper than in switzerland,so why not buying there?

For example,If I go to an Audi dealer or to a private person (for 2nd hand car) is there any prevention from them to sell me a car eventhough I live in CH?

I would appreciate your input in this matter.

All my best!

Degoren

Re: importng car from Germany...Possible?

It's absolutely no problem, and the car dealers close to the border are happy to do the export/import paperwork for you. You only have to get it through the initial inspection and registration in Switzerland yourself (takes about 3hours).

Hi FrankS --

Do you have personal experience with any of the dealers on the border? I'd be very interested in buying over-the-border, especially if there is someone who can handle the paperwork on my behalf.

Re: importng car from Germany...Possible?

Go to any dealer in Lörrach or Weil-am-Rhein - as FrankS said "close to the border", and they offer this service.

I know people who've done this, and it's really easy.

Re: importng car from Germany...Possible?

It might be worth noting that not all cars are cheaper in Germany. In fact neither are car parts. I have had on occasion to compare prices for parts ordered from main dealers in both Germany and Switzerland - the Swiss dealer was cheaper - and able to get the part quicker.

The latter I couldn't understand as it should make no difference at all if it comes from the central european store - which is where the part would have come from.

Additionally I recently got a quote for a few bits from the UK and Switzerland - the Swiss price was 510chf all inclusive - the UK was £430 + fitting

Most are though. Volvo's for a fact. Collegue just got one at 17% less than the net Swiss price after the pathetic 2% Swiss discount.

Try the EU Neuwagen import. They have great discounts. Autobild has a list every week with the highest discounts on new cars.

Re: importng car from Germany...Possible?

Thank you all for your replies.

1. What is Autobild exactly? they do the whole procedure in case of importing a car?

2. Can I buy also a 2nd hand car from a private person? If yes, who should provide me with all necessary documents?

And last one: If I have permit B, do I need to pay taxes as I consider to be on temporary residency...?

Thank you all....

Re: importng car from Germany...Possible?

I bought my Audi here:
http://www.auto-eberhart.ch/

The company specializes on buying German cars from corporate fleets in bulk and importing them to Switzerland. They had 15 or so A4s that were identical to mine... Thanks to some tax benefits, German companies regularly buy new cars (basically does the government support the production in this way...). They have therefore many VW/Audi/BMW for significantly cheaper prices than the AMAG and others, but are not exactly as cheap as your local scrap yard type of dealer... a compromise so to speak (and I trust them on the low kms of their cars).

So no, I did not import myself, but according to the website of the Strassenverkehrsamt Zurich, it does not seem to be rocket science as long as it is an EU car, otherwise you can get into troubles.

I am currently thinking about importing a car myself, but the real price differences are in US cars, not the German market.

That#s the thing. Net list prices d not differ too much, but Swiss dealers hardly give any discounts, while 15% are normal in Germany (often given as free extra equipment, or as a too high price for your old car).

Yes, but then you won't get 19% VAT back, so that doesn't pay off. If you buy a used car from a dealer, ask if the Mehrwertsteuer (VAT) is ausweisbar (deductable).

Re: importing car from Germany...Possible?

I will actually have to be doing this shortly too. I've been living in Germany since 2007 and only recently moved to CH. My car was a new reimport VW Fox from France to Germany... I too will need to eventally do the paperwork to bring it here. I hope it's as easy as you guys say it is

PS... buying a new reimport will save you a lot of money. I bought my car on Autoscout24... the original price for my cars model and features according to the VW site was 16,000euro and I bought my car new for 9,400 Good luck with your seach!

German Car Import

I am thinking of getting an Audi A6 or Merc, prices over the boarder seem to be a bit better.

Has any one imported from Germany before? I am looking for a big garage that will (at a price) do all the import paper work for you....any recommendations would be good.....

Re: German Car Import

I love the A6. I've had two now.

Good luck with that. If you do import one, start a thread as to how you achieved it.

Re: German Car Import

Hi all!
1. Who can clarify me please, how exactly I will get 19% of German VAT back? Can they sell the car to me 19% cheaper at once or I have to wait and ask for it after CH-custom clearance?
2. Who can advise a good BMW or VW official garage close to the boarder for car buying? According web-sites - there are lot of cars near Hannover or Hamburg, but it is to far away to try to go there without a car.

Cheers
Pavel

Re: importing car from Germany...Possible?

Hi
I think I can help here. Last month I imported an Audi from Germany. I used a Swiss company called autociel.ch and they spoke excellent english. They handled all paperwork and also collected the car from Germany and brought it to my apartment. It was a very easy process.

I just looked on line mobile.de and chose my car from a main Audi dealer and then agreed a price in euros and then autociel.ch took over. They also paid for the car in euros and then I paid them in chf. I got a great rate 1.34. But now its even better.

I saved over 10 000 chf from an equivalent car here in Switzerland and my car came with a 4yr warranty from Audi!

Cool.. How much they charge you for it? It can happens, that the benefit from buying a middle priced car will be eaten by the middleman.
