What is the deal with the new trams being tested ? (Zurich)

Hi - was just reading a couple threads on trams so I thought I would ask the Q. I understand that ZVV are trialling some trams from Germany, Bern or Basel. Why are they not just purchasing more CObras (Pinninfarina design). There must be some story behind this, could not find easily, just for interest thanks

Cos the Cobras are soulless, unreliable and smell of old peoples' wee

They tested trams from Basel a couple of years ago round Zurich; they didn't smell of wee, but they were noisier inside than outside.

Re: What is the deal with the new trams being tested ? (Zurich)

Besides the smelly A/C there's also the problem with the wheels. They tend to become polygonal and need to be fixed or replaced which is expensive.

The Cobras are cute from the outside but noisy and not very comfortable on the inside. Most of these problems (except for the A/C) are related to the 100%-low-floor vehicle concept which leaves very little space for wheels, suspension and drivetrain. Therefore they won't reorder more Cobras.

Cobra was custom built for Zurich. Hence low volume, teething troubles and too expensive.

I saw this picture of one of the new trams. Has anyone seen them about yet? Is the paintwork as confusing as it appears in the picture?

Haven't seen it in person yet but it was in the papers this morning: it's a one-off designed by a team of art students.

The theme is anamorphosis (optical illusions that you have to stand in a specific place to view.) Lots more on the inside, see pictures here.
