How to get a cheap and good Bicycle in Zurich?

Hi There,

I just arrived in Zurich and as an ex-professional biker are inspired by the culture of cycling here!

I have not taken my bike with me hoping to get one here; new or used, doesn't matter, the thing is that I can't pay much for now, but want to get one ASAP.

I found a lot of information in the forum, but most of it was out of date.

I would be most grateful, if you could refresh the information about holding sales, second-hand bicycle markets and stuff like that, may be you also have a bike for sale...

Thank you in advance!

You could always do what the locals do - steal one...

I think it is not smart to steal for locals as the probability is high that they will be caught instead you can steal several ones before your departure for taking them home

You could also try the Kanzlei-Flohmarkt in Zurich on Saturdays (and yes, the police is there regularly to check if any of the bikes are stolen... if you are worried, write down the bike number and check with the police yourself), or try one of the local bike shops which usually sell 2nd hand as well.

Re: How to get a cheap and good Bicycle in Zurich?

"Cheap AND Good"......... this is an unusual combination of words to hear from an "Ex-Pro" biker

It sounds like:
a) You know what you're talking about, and
b) Will know what you want when you see it.

It took me a few months of scouting around Flea markets, and Velo marts (listed earlier) to find what I wanted.

The Velo marts you can expect an approx 200CHF kickoff price, but this does not accompany quality.

I was at a flea market near the top of the lake in Zurich when I found a gem..... I had a busted leg at the time, so it made for a difficult ride home (I wasn't expecting it.... it was just there and for 100CHF.... and I love it).

So in short, I'd suggest:
a) put the word out to your mates that you are looking (word of mouth gets around)
b) Check out your local flea market on a Saturday morning, or
c) Go HELL early to one of the Velo markets.

another hint for the velo market...... try to locate them where they hold them and float by there at about midnight the night before.

Usually the guys are begining to unload the bikes then, and when I asked, they were going to sell me one there and then.

Good luck

Sometimes there are cheap bicycles for sale in Velo shops or even HB.

I bought mine (new) with cheap price in one of the Velo exhibition in HB main station.

Re: How to get a cheap and good Bicycle in Zurich?

I understand the Kanton (or some official entity) periodically gives away used touring bicycles to local residents. Last December there was a trailer set up around Bürkliplatz for that purpose. Sorry I can't be more helpful than that, but maybe somebody else knows more details. (You can't get much cheaper than free — but I don't know what the OP considers good.)

Go for the battery powered model as you never find a plug near the parked bikes...
