Re: Red flash speeding camera?

The fine arrive yesterday. I opened the envelope with not a little trepidation. I'd been juggling figures for weeks, speeding plus "bonus points" for doin it in the road-works, and wondering how fast I was actually going. 91 in an 80 zone, minus 5km = 86km, 6 - 10k's over the limit will get you a 60chf fine, plus the bonus points(?), there were none!

I'm sure IBD will let us know the size of the fine when it come .

Re: Red flash speeding camera?

I've been flashed this morning...at 6:45...

I was taking my girlfriend to the airport and after Gubristtunnel I thought: "pay attention to those radars on the other side when you drive back"

I was obviously not paying attention...and got flashed. I don't know, I drive that road almost everyday and those 2 big boxes are difficult to miss, but as I said, I didn't pay attention.

I was around 140Km/h and the area is 100. My car drive between 3-7Kms slower than the speed reflected on the display.

So once deducted the std 6Km/h, in the best case scenario they got me at 127Km/h, in the worst at 131Km/h... it looks like I will lose my license and will get a nice fine.

What a great start for a Sunday

Re: Red flash speeding camera?

I have been flashed at the start of road works when the speed limit dropped from 120 to 100. The camera was at the speed limit marker!
What amazed me was that the 120KPH sign and 100KPH sign were only about 20 metres apart.
260 CHF's fine, luckily in a Hire car and a UK license at the time.

Yeah.. Slow down.. 140 in a 100 limit... Seems a little excessive to me.. Slow down.. Take it Easy..

On my way to work, I used to run for the metro if I could see the doors were about to close.. Until I realised that the next train was nly 2 minutes away, and instead of being at work 2 minutes earlier, I could stand and enjoy the music on my mp3 player.. I know which I prefer..

Slow down.. Take it easy.. Especially in the road works..

Who said I was doing 140?

It was 120 in a 120 limit, reduced to 100 within 20 metres of the 120 sign and before the road works started.
It's obvious they planned to catch everyone going through that section because it was virtually impossible to slow down between the 2 signs with a camera at the 100 sign.

Nobody.. I was talking to Ale_50d

So, ignoring the fact that there was a 120 sign for a sec, you're saying that you couldn't see the 100 sign in time to slow down for it? You may have been doing 120 when you passed the 120 sign but you MUST be doing 100 when pass the 100 sign, otherwise you'll get done, simple as that. You therefor need to slow for the 100 sign BEFORE you reach the 100 sign, even if that means you pass the 120 sign at less than 120. It's a maximum speed limit sign, and not a directive.. That's the argument you'll be presented with if you try to contest the ticket, and there's no defence unless you can prove that there were extenuating circumstances.

I'm no fan of the Swiss speed police, and I've had my fair share of tickets, but after 5 years here, I've started to get used to it. Slow down or pay the penalty, there's no alternatives.

Re: Red flash speeding camera?

The important question is not how far the 120kph sign was from the 100kph sign, but from how far away could you see the 100kph?

And that's my point, the 100 kph was obscured by the 120 because of the angle of approach.

It's not just CH that does this sort of thing, in the UK it's common to have a camera in a 30 mph zone followed by a 40 or 50 mph sign just 30 metres up the road.
Most drivers approaching the sign think that's the speed limit for the road, accelerate past the camera and "Flash", done for speeding again.

Re: Red flash speeding camera?

You could try arguing that. However it's unlikely to work. As the counter argument to that is that you were driving at a speed inappropriate to the conditions.

However there have been times when I've been flashed but not received a fine.

I don't really understand why people expect the police here to act differently to the uk. The reason why these "tricks" are used is because they work, and the reason that we have speed cameras is because the police make money from them.

I'll put money on your calculated speed on that camera being over 120.

Re: Red flash speeding camera?

Maths time is it??

The distance between the 2 signposts was as you say 20m - 60ft - 4 car lengths

You were travelling at 75mph so your thinking time was 75ft. Assuming the calculation as per 80mph (IE 5* multiplier - or 5ft per mph).

Decrease in speed required = 12.5mph = 67.5ft = 142.5ft TOTAL

So if you want to feel vindicated - you didn't have time to stop and the system is unfair.

HOWEVER

There is a good chance that roadworks were signposted previous - usually mentioning 800/600/400/200m marker boards. Therefore there is a good chance you KNOW that you'll have to slow down - so I'm taking the thinking distance away. There is also a good chance that your "20m between signposts" was probably more - maybe something like 50-75m - or enough for you to see the sign come off the throttle and coast a bit.

Therefore the braking distance of 67.5ft is easily less than the 150-225ft between signs.

That would only apply to foreigners I think. Us UK drivers know that speed limit signs in the UK are normally only placed at the beginning and end of the limit zones - excepting the M25 of course..

But they do act differently . In the UK you can talk your way out of minor offences with abject apologies and promises to never do it again. In Switzerland ? No chance .

Which means you were well over 120 when you passed the camera and so would have got done if the limit remained at 120 anyway - albeit with a much smaller fine .

Re: Red flash speeding camera?

I think I triggered one today by only 5-6km more...I was doing 55-56 in a 50 zone...No flash but small red laser once or twice...Immediately slowed down to pass it but have a feeling it was for me even though there was traffic around me.

Will see.
