Importing Toyota Corolla from US to CH - experiences?

Dear Friends,

I am exploring the costs associated in moving a our Toyota Corolla from the US to CH. After quickly browsing in the forums, my impression is that it may be expensive to make the car comply with CH safety/emission standards. Also spare parts availabilitity and insurance prices could be an issue.

Can any of you share your experiences? I'd appreciate your tips.

Best Wishes

Unless you have a sentimental attachment to your Corolla, I would sell it and buy something else here. In addition to emissions, compliance, spare parts etc.. you will find it very difficult to sell it if you decide to upgrade. Swiss people are reluctant to buy non-Swiss matriculated cars, even from neighhbouring Germany.

There is a ton of threads on the forum about this - the general advice about non-European commonly found here cars is that , if it is not a collectible, it is not worth the trouble. Plus, prices are coming down on cars here , I've noted, and hopefully is true too on secondhands.

Re: Importing Toyota Corolla from US to CH - experiences?

I imported my Ford Focus Kona about 10 years ago and did not have too many issues getting the paperwork changed.
What I needed to do at the time is change the "standing lights" that used to be orange ( the light for the blinkers) and I found a garage who just added a small light bulb in the "normal" front lights, and changed the wiring accordingly and that was it.
So all the transformations in Switzerland only cost me about 400 CHF - and I am not sure if this is actually a very good deal I got or not - I assume not as I am a girl and did not know too much about cars.
There are papers available from the Strassenverkehrsamt or the Service Navigation with the details you need to respect to import your car.
I would do it again in a heart beat - a little bit of work, yes, but you can put your car on a boat and have the trunk full of goodies :-)
Hope this helps.
