It is a very nice blue - but 5000chf to import it - ouch.

In fact 6000chf to import a Passat is another ouch. The Volvo cost me 2 headlights (from scrapyards - about 150chf) - brake pipes, a clean - and that was it - I think it was around 1000chf all in.

That was just to get Z-plates. In the end the car was sold to a trader for export because it couldn't be imported to Switzerland due to the engine being non-compliant to emission laws at the time of production.

Re: What car did you import? How much did it cost & real experiences only

I've found this forum usefull for my car import, so here are my experiences.

I bought a Vauxhall VX220 Turbo (here they're called Opel Speedster) in the UK. It cost approx chf 16k. Equivilant car here would cost approx chf 40k.

Not having an address in the UK I trailered it over. Not a problem for me as I have a trailer, and I bought a number of other things in the UK that were substantially cheaper than here.

I got to the border late and he gave me a document to take to an internal border office to pay the tax. I did this (I think you have 3 days) and it cost circa chf 2k.

To book an MFK you need: -

1) Document showing import paid.
2) European Certificate of Conformity (that I bought from Vauxhall and they kindly supplied it in English and German).
3) Abgas test.
4) Export document from the UK. This is part of the original registration document that the seller tears off and gives you.

Hardest part of the import was finding LHD lamps for the front of the car. But that is a specific issue for my car. Winter wheels were also difficult to find. The rear fog lamp was on the wrong side but I took out the bulb and that was sufficient.

I took the car to the MFK station on a trailer, but you can pay approx chf 80 and get 3 day temporary plates.

He failed the car on three points. A rear wheel balance weight was rubbing against the brake caliper (the purchased winter wheels), one headlight was pointing too low, the other too high, and the right front wheel rubbed against the wheel arch at full lock.

He gave me a permit to drive the car, but I had to take it back within 30 days showing that the above points were resolved. All very reasonable.

Incidentally, I live in Kanton Schwyz and have never cleaned the engine bay of a car before an MFK and it's never been a problem, including this time.

RHD isn't such an issue in an unusul car, and it's small enough that I can reach for car park tickets.

All in all, I paid half the Swiss price. It was a hastle so I wouldn't do it for a normal car. I wouldn't do it if I didn't have a trailer. Don't know what it's worth here, and I'm not selling, but if I did sell it I'd be surprised if I hadn't made a substantial profit. I would do it again.
