seconhand car purchase in Switerland

What experience have people had with a private cash purchase in Switzerland of a second hand UK reg car, UK plates, driven over here by owner in March 2010. I would drive it back to UK on present UK plates and UK insurance and keep it in UK.

Re: seconhand car purchase in Switerland

Make sure the whole thing isn't a scam.

There have been a number of cars advertised (as described) where the ad is simply a scam.

Re: seconhand car purchase in Switerland

Thanks, but happy it is genuine sale. What worries me is whether a UK reg car can be kept in Switzerland on UK plates over 6 months? What is the check? If I became the owner does the time period start again from date of my ownership?

Insurance??

You can get a green card for 90 days - but beyond that you'll be 3rd party. I can't see it being a problem if you buy it and take it straight back.

I think as a furner living here you can keep a car on foreign plates for up to 1 year without importing it.

Re: seconhand car purchase in Switerland

you can keep in on UK plates for a year. Some UK insurance companies will cover you for all this time insurance wise. There's one mentioned in the forum somewhere in Wales, they gave me a better quote that what I was paying in the UK and it covered me here. They are a bit slow in reply but pretty good.

A search should find the original post.

But who is the 'you'? The buyer or the seller? Do the seller's months count and what check can anyone make? Do I need some proof of the seller's statement of the time it has been in Switzerland??

As for me, I don't 'live here'; I come on holiday for a couple of months a time.

The car can remain in Switzerland for a year - otherwise every 11 months and 28 days, you could change owners and keep it here for ever. (Obviously the you in this case would be a series of yous, not just you...)
