Form 13.20A and US plates, Bremerhaven customs

Good morning,

I'm going to bring my car from US through Bremerhaven (primarily due to costs involved with getting it to Geneva). My understanding is that I'd need to post a 30% bail on it (since this is T-1 transit through EU) in the port and I'd presumably get it back after I provide evidence that I've registred it somewhere else.

However, I'd like to drive for a year on US plates, without registring it in Switzerland.

"The customs authorities will stamp and give you back customs form 18.44 and they will provide you with form 13.20A, which is essential in order to register a vehicle with the vehicle licensing authorities. Moreover, form 13.20A entitles you to drive your vehicle on foreign licence plates for a period of one year from the date of issue of your first legitimation card."

What will I have to send as a proof to Germany's customs in order to get this deposit back?

In addition, the costs I've found to transport the car to Bremerhaven from NJ range in $700 area (+ additional 200-300 EUR port charges)

Also, if someone can suggest a company that they've used - that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks a lot

Here is a contact at Schumacher Cargo. I used them to transport my car from Houston to Basel. They delivered it to my door. It costed me approximately $3000 including port fees.

$1000 seems like a great deal to get your car shipped. Is is a roll on
roll off deal? If you don't mind telling us, who is shipping your car
for you?

There are a few others who have done this and I hope they can help.
For myself, I had the movers bring everything so they did all the
paperwork and delivered to my door.

thx
Anwar

Anwar,
I can PM you the companies' names. It seems as 700-1000 is common for shared container shipment to Bremerhaven.
I'm starting to think I should register the car in Switzerland.
I will actually start another topic on driving in Europe with US plates.

thanks for sending me the details.

There are lots of posts on importing cars. Sometimes
it can be hard to tell facts from hear-say though.

Anwar

russiangeneva,
I am picking up my car at Bremerhaven and was told to pay the 30% for the T1. I was also told that as soon as I close the T1 at the German border right before I enter Switzerland, the 30% will be wired to me.
Registering the car in Switzerland is a separate deal.
Have you picked up the car yet?

maruca22,
No, I'm waiting to clear out all the details. Thank you for the tip though. I assume you must cross the border during working hours. Have you checked the hours? When are you going to pick the car? Also, I wonder - do you plan to bring cash? Since I heard there was a limit on 2000 ER per day on card transactions.
Registration isn't an issue currently - I'm just trying to deal with transportation.

Re: Form 13.20A and US plates, Bremerhaven customs

I used interfracht.de

and I told German customs that I am making a vacation in Europe, so they gave me a 6 months driving permit for Germany, went to Switzerland and insured the vehicle and drove around for 12 months...no sweat

so I never had to pay the deposit the Germans wanted if you do it my way...

Re: Form 13.20A and US plates, Bremerhaven customs

This is interesting becuase I am looking at importing Porsches from the USA to Switzerland.

I think US$1,000 is cheap for shipment of a car straight to Germany.
I am surprised there is not a Roll On Roll Off available in Germany as a lot of BMWs and Mercs are manufactured in Germany and USA and transprted vise versa.

I was looking at Roll on Roll Off through the UK and then bring it into Switzerland.
