Moving car to Germany

Hi Everyone,

Another question about moving the car from CH to DE. Here's our revised plan:

We'd like to drive our car over to Germany with our current Swiss license plates and insurance. There we'll register for German license plates and take out German insurance. After that's all settled, we'll mail a package to the Swiss Department of Motor Vehicles with our Swiss license plates and a note thanking them for all the photos and the cute little orange pieces of paper

Is this an acceptable way of getting our car to Germany (we're moving there) or do I need to deal with transfer license plates or some other procedure/paperwork?

Thanks for the info!

I think you need to register the car at the border, together with the other stuff you bring over (your belongings, basically).
Same applies to the reverse process (import of a car to Switzerland in the course of a relocation).
If you don't do that, you simply won't get license-plates.
I would check both the Swiss Custom's website and the website of the German Zoll for more information.

Re: Moving car to Germany

If you are moving are you using an agent for all the paperwork?

You can put the car on the same paperwork as your other belongings and so save a lot of extra costs.

Once the Swiss plates are back in the Swiss motoring office, they will inform your insurance company, and about next January the insurance company might refund the remainder of your premium that you didn't use.

Re: Moving car to Germany

Interesting about the same paperwork as the belongings. As far as I understand it, all my stuff is "Umzugsgute" and not really subject to taxes. Haven't really tested that theory, but moving to Switzerland from Germany wasn't much hastle.

As far as paperwork goes, I'm fluent in German and "quale" through the paperwork myself. It's a pain and reading law in German sucks, but I like to know what it is, and where it stands. I usually print out the laws of relevance to what I'm doing and bring them with in case of any discussions with the customs officers. You'd be amazed how you sometimes get a different answer from each and every person you talk to at the border.
