So what are the rules ??

For working on cars in shared garages?

Yesterday I had to adjust the accelerator cable on one of the cars, as the cables stretched a bit, this involved lifting the bonnet and turning a screw a few times.

While I was doing this a few of the neighbours parked up and looked at me as if I was taking a dump in the middle of the garage.

so what rule have I broken now?

the rule of not overpaying an 'expert' to do it for you?

Rule 112

You should know this one by now.

Thou must contribute at all times to the social security, benefits and retirement package of all workers, no matter how costly, in der Suisse.....

Now take that thing to the garage.

- They must have thought you're on welfare, homeless and messing around with someone's car to make a few bucks. Because it is completely acceptable to pay some ridiculous amount to have someone come in and tighten those damn screws.

You may be required to wear a special safety outfit.
Something like this (you can never be underdressed in these cases):

I did have to spray a little wd40, but no one was around when I did it, so I think I got away with it.

Ah. But do you have the correct "WD40 spraying" certification?

Re: So what are the rules ??

Hahaha! Made me smile- I wash my car by hand outside our flat, change the winter tyres over, do very minor maintenance etc.; some of the looks you get are quite amusing! Fortunately, my neighbours are all nice people, and probably see me as a bit of an eccentric foreigner- I can imagine that if I had wanky neighbours, the situation would be very different.

98% of BMW owners never look under a hood (bonnet). I guess they thought you'd stolen it?

Are you sure he wasn't sneaking a look under the bonnet. What goes on under there is a mystery to most Swiss guys*. He was probably looking for the lickle pixies that make the car go .

Edit: * Roger, if you read this, that doesn't include you, obviously .

Re: So what are the rules ??

Now I'm squinting like a fool to try to ID it.

I had this same problem in middle-class suburbs in California. People look at you as though you've just kicked a dog if they see you under a car.

Good things about living among the working class: they come over to help, they bring beer, and you can borrow their tools.

Your neighbour has never been the same since he inspected under his own bonnet following a strange hissing noise...
