Best way to get stuff to Switzerland from UK

Hi all,

I need to move some more stuff from the UK to Switzerland and was wondering if anybody could make a suggestion on what the most efficient way to do this is.

Initially, it is not a lot of stuff but I don't have my own car or van so will have to rent. The main move of all my household goods will wait until I am settled in my own place but until then I really want to get some basics (hiking boots, snowboard equip, some electronics and a bicycle) over here.

I have looked at the following possibilities.

1. Fly to the UK. Rent a van there and drive stuff over. Then drive the van back to the UK and fly by here. Seems very complex.

Basically these are my questions:

1. Is van rental possible here and would I be able to drag it all the way to the UK? Does anybody have an idea of prices?
2. Are there any transport share schemes available for getting stuff transported between the two countries?
3. What am I not thinking about that is an obvious answer?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Best way to get stuff to Switzerland from UK

van hire is tricky as most companies (at least the ones I looked at) limit your mileage, the you have an excess per mile over, which more then doubles the costs. Here the excess was 50rp per 1km, given that dover 1000km from zurich you can work it out

I don't know if this is possible or not but there are large international rental companies like Hertz.

Maybe you could hire in the UK and drop off in Switzerland or somewhere in Europe, save you the hassle of getting it back across the channel !!

I looked into this but generally find that the company is going to charge you much more for getting the van back than it would cost you to do it yourself.

People like Hertz and Avis would be the ones that I would rent from as they are generally more reasonable on the "big" rentals.

I've just had an idea...Maybe you could hire a local 'Man With A Van' found in the classifieds of the local rag, pay him his rate for the duration and his fares to and from, he can't argue his destination because you have paid for the time...As a sweetener stick a few crates of beer on his seat when you leave him????

Yup, good idea, most probably best to find somebody from one of the Eastern European countries when there which will cut down on the Swiss labour costs. Advertise for the job in somewhere like Poland. Guy drives to the UK, then dropps me off in Switzerland. I most probably have a contact in the UK that could set something like that up as they know loads of Poles that drive stuff to the UK and then often have empty vans on the way back.

Another option would be hire a van in France, drive it to the UK and drop it off at the nearest town over the French border. France is a large country so the number of KM should be a problem.

Another option Van available back to the UK

Re: Best way to get stuff to Switzerland from UK

The cost of two flights + van hire would appear to be quite a lot and as you say, you plan to bring loads of stuff over later.

Wouldn't it be much cheaper to just hire or buy the stuff you 'really' need now and then bring the rest of the stuff with the van when, as you describe, you are more settled?

I did the flights and lorry-hire thing and it was quite an ordeal due to a number of factors outside of my control.

Re: Best way to get stuff to Switzerland from UK

Well, some of the stuff is becomming important like winter clothes and I don't really want to duplicate all of that. I guess a simple cost/benefit analysis will show the way forward.

In that case, depending on where you are going in the U.K. have you considered a few suitcases on the train?

It's another possibility

Yes, I think there may be a distinct possiblity that the train is the right option. Will need to figure out if Eurostar want to bend me over a barrel and do horrible things to me for travelling with a bike but otherwise sounds good.

Re: Best way to get stuff to Switzerland from UK

For a move to Germany I bought a Ford transit removal van off ebay, loaded it up, and just drove. The van cost me 1K gbp. You can sell it again when you are done. It was really great fun to drive. One problem is that many UK rental companies don't like their vans going abroad. Next time I would pay extra and buy one with a tail lift.

Re: Best way to get stuff to Switzerland from UK

I moved from UK to Switzerland with two months in Germany in between. Most household stuff stored and then delivered direct into Switzerland.

Hired a van with Hertz and drove to Germany and then took the van back again. It had unlimited mileage so no problems there and they were okay with it coming onto the contintent. Only slight issue was customs/border control going back to UK. Both French and British sides of Eurotunnel insisted on searching the empty van, which only took a couple of minutes explaining the move. (Think a single woman driving a van didn't fit their norm).

It worked out cheaper than one-way hire, even with different drop off in France.

Yup, that is what I was thinking.

Okay, current best plan looks like.

Fly back, collect critical stuff and train back with bike.

Then fly, get rest of stuff, van forth and back, then fly back here for the bulk or everything.

Hi Colin,

There is a good chance I will be driving to Zurich, 01 October 2010 with a part full van.

Please indicate if this may be of interest.

Best

If that doesn't work out, there is a guy here who moves people back to the UK, I know two people at least who he has done it for, both recommended him highly. Probably he would go the other way too, I'm guessing. He's given me good advice in the past. I'm sure he's got an ad on here, if you're interested and can;t find it, let me know and I'll dig his name out

Hmm.... I'm a Canadian about to fly into Geneva. I take/teach disaster relief classes (one hat I have is as a logistics coordinator) over the next 3 months, both in London (RedR.org) and Geneva (NGO Management School); back and forth 3 times. Was thinking I'd drive one of the trips to see more then the airports. I like moving things?. Cheers, G
