A bit dated but nevertheless a good guide as to prices and availability for non-residents.

If I have a Gleis 7 card, can I use it on SBB trains that go to, say, Germany?

You might need a Railplus add-on for cross border rail journeys.

Re: The Swiss Public Transport System

Dear all,

I'm traveling to GVA from Zurich on Monday and get back to Zurich on Friday. what would be the cheapest ticket (for a year)?
There are many kind of tickets which can cover the route but I'm looking for the cheapest one.

Any clue from someone who did it already?

Thanks a lot!

Re: The Swiss Public Transport System

I don't know the cheapest...but why not just get a second class GA. You can also use it on other modes of transport like trams, buses etc.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: The Swiss Public Transport System

Depends on how many weeks you are traveling between these 2 cities i wound recommend a GA as well or (Year has 52 weeks, but you can deduct 5 weeks for your holidays and a few unknown for business trips etc.)
A standard trip from Zurich to GVA and return with 1/2 Tax Card will cost 88.20 sfr , so if you are travelling 46 weeks the total will be around 4057.20 sfr.
The GA costs 3550 sfr per year , so you will save around 500 sfr and can make
trips around the whole switzerland as well in your free time.

Re: The Swiss Public Transport System

I have a question about the on-board bus ticket machine. I travel from Saint Genis to Val Thoiry (in zone 86) and back about once per week and I am unsure about which option to select on the machine.
I have attached a picture of a typical ticket machine and it is pretty clear that the correct button is the purple one in the left hand column, third from the top. On the bus however, this button isn't labelled at all and doesn't respond when pressed. I usually just press a random button and pay 3.50CHF. Can anybody help please?

The driver was fobbing me off for sure. There's no way you can travel for over 30 minutes for 1.40CHF. Also, he said the same to a lady who was going from Val Thoiry to Fearney Voltaire and that is the full bus route?!

Re: The Swiss Public Transport System

The filename's corrupt, it has a trailing - after the pdf extension so Windoze can't open it.

Download it , open it in a folder and remove the - (rename it to Tarife2013anglais.pdf from Tarife2013anglais.pdf-) and then you can open it

Re: The Swiss Public Transport System

Urgent question. I have a monthly pass that covers Zug/Baar zones 610 623.

I often go to Zurich/Lucerne. When I go to these cities, should I be using the stop just outside of my covered zones as my departure point when buying tickets?

Only if the train actually stops there. If it's a through-train you'll have to buy a ticket from inside your zone.

Gotcha.

The train I take to Zuri is an IR so I guess I'll have to pay at Baar.

Correct me if I'm wrong but is it just the IR trains that are the directs?

IR, IC and a few others. I don't know which trains run through Zug so I can't be more specific, sorry.
