stats on gottard tunnel traffic jams

I am thinking of driving thru the gottard tunnel during the upcoming winter school holidays, and was wondering if there are particular times/days after the holiday starts, that might be better driving - e.g. does very early saturday am lower the probability of getting stuck in the tunnel? is early sunday am a better time? For example today (friday) evening, I heard of the traffic in the tunnel backed up by 4 km (?).

I just do not want to get stuck in that traffic jam in the tunnel.

So I was wondering if there are (historical) stats on traffic jams in the gottard tunnel, which I could look at.

TIA!

Re: stats on gottard tunnel traffic jams

If it's any comfort, unless there is a crash, there is no jam in the tunnel. They just let the traffic in in dribbles so that the column of cars in the tunnel itself keeps moving along nicely. There's no point in beating about the bush, the jam at each end is a couple of hours and several kilometres long at the beginning and end of the holidays. There just isn't a great deal of choice when one want to get over/under a mountain range and when the pass is closed there's only under left.

As the years have gone by, folk have got more and more clever and instead of all going at the same time on the same day as they once did, now, some start in the afternoon, some in the evening and some in the middle of the night, but as a lot more folk go through the Gotthard than when the tunnel was built, there's a similar length of jam - for a longer time.

I DO love cheering people up.

How about "Telling people the facts of life"

This is a universal problem. While working I lived in the Boston area and went to New Hampshire almost every weekend. Many years ago leaving Boston around 2 PM guaranteed an easy drive (I had enough flexibility in my work). Others had dinner in Boston before traveling and also had an easy drive. Now I hear from my younger friends who still work () that there is a perpetual traffic jam on Fridays.

Gotthard is unpredictable
I'd say it's best to call the traffic info at 163 (1.20-/minute). The service is automatic, so you'd just have to select the language and the road (A2 highway in your case) and listen to the current traffic update.

Last WE it told us that the tunnel was backed up by 3 km. We got through VERY fast. When we hear that it's blocked for 5-7 km, we'd go through San Bernardino or the pass (in summer-early fall).

Bon voyage!

Re: stats on gottard tunnel traffic jams

We got there about 17:00ish today. There was a 5km tailback. Christ knows what it is like in the height of summer.

Cheers,
Nick

Good luck with that. I decided against it and took the train. Glad I did

Re: stats on gottard tunnel traffic jams

i have driven thru the tunnel, all times of the year and all but one of those 19 times was clear.Drive in the middle of the night.Only problem for me is the timing,London to italy is fun but very unpredictable.Much unlike the traffic.
