Shipping a car from Switzerland to the UK

Hi

Has anyone shipped a UK car back to the UK from Switzerland? Can you recommend any companies to do this?

I've decided to sell my car in the UK because I'm not using it often enough. It's 5 years old and has a low mileage for it's age and is generally in good condition, so I think an older left hand drive car would be more suitable for me here.

But now I have to get the car back to the UK. I've contacted some garages who can take the car from me, now I just have to get it there!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

Re: Shipping a car from Switzerland to the UK

There is a guy I know who does that sort of thing. He moves colleagues Astons about when they need them in different locations.

Not sure what he charges for a day though - and remember you will have fuel and ferry charges on top - and any cost of him getting back.

You may be better served to drive it back yourself - and have a weekend/few days back in the UK - for a bit of shopping and stocking up on Marmite

Re: Shipping a car from Switzerland to the UK

Thanks for the advice, but I was hoping for a company that would pick the car up and take it over rather than have someone drive it.

Would love to take it back myself and come back loaded with orange squash and multiple flavours of crisps etc, but I'm running low on holidays so was hoping there might be another option.

Never mind

Why not try your luck in the For Sale section, people are returning back to Blighty all the time thus saving you the hassle of selling it once it arrives in the UK.

Re: Shipping a car from Switzerland to the UK

Unless it is something like one of Dodgy Ken's Aston Martins, the cost of getting a company to do this for you is going to be exhorbitant...

Total drive time from Zurich to somewhere in the south east of the UK is only around 10 hours, easily doable in a day, so you could do it in a weekend and save holiday days for something more interesting - drive back on Saturday, stock up in Tesco on Sunday (oh yes, a Sunday!) and fly back in the evening.

Re: Shipping a car from Switzerland to the UK

Thanks everyone.

I'm going to drive it back to England and have one of those lovely "We buy any car" garages take it off my hands.

I know I could try to sell it here, but I'm on a time limit! It came here with me in November so I have to get it back out of the country in the next few weeks or it's Swiss licence plate time. Being my usual organised self again

Indeed....Tesco on a Sunday...at whichever time suits me...bliss!

Thanks again for taking the time to respond. Was worth a shot!

Re: Shipping a car from Switzerland to the UK

It's a Suzuki Swift, 5 years old.

It's proving to be a little tricky to get it back as I can't register it in the UK without a valid MOT, British insurance and a tax disc, which is making the "take it back in a day" plan difficult.

Once I figure it out I'll post what I did on here in case anyone else find themselves in a similar situation.

As I said, if the price is right you may find that someone here is willing to take it off your hands and deal with all that.

so the car has no mot, insurance or tax?? and its on uk plates?

if the car isn't legal in the place of registration, then its not legal here. The channel tunnel and ferry ports all have anpr and a car with no tax, mot or insurance would set all there alarm bells ringing. thats assuming you got that far without the french pulling you over to see your docs.

Re: Shipping a car from Switzerland to the UK

It has Swiss insurance and has been imported, I just haven't switched the licence plates yet (it's been less than a year).

I was told when I imported it that I didn't have to switch the licence plates until it had been in the country for a year. I have the Swiss docs to show that it's been imported.

Now I've decided I don't want an RHD car here and will take it back the UK, where I will hand it over to a car garage. Either I will find a garage who will do the import or I will arrange that part myself and have them sell it.

Re: Shipping a car from Switzerland to the UK

If the car has Swiss insurance, and you have an MOT appointment pre-arranged you should be able to at least drive it to a testing station as soon as you leave the ferry. Perhaps give the DVLA a call as they must get this all the time.

so you still have the v5 for the car? all you did was declare it here?

Re: Shipping a car from Switzerland to the UK

Thanks Castro, that's the plan.

And thanks for the advice of selling it here, I know it's a great idea but I'm not experienced with these things and would rather just have a garage take it off my hands and deal with selling it.

My whole issue is I permanently exported it from the UK as I'd planned to keep it. If I'd just temporarily exported it this wouldn't be so much hassle.

But you live and learn....

I think completing the import and using it here is your easiest and cheapest option now

I would tend to agree, however you're not going to get more than scrap value if you decide to sell in a year or two because its a right hooker.

I have made the calls to the DVLA. As long as there is a pre-arranged MOT test, there is not a problem. BUT it is not adviseable to drive the car through France etc.... the only way is to put it on a trailer

Re: Shipping a car from Switzerland to the UK

well of course its doable, but iirc to import a car into the uk, or back into the uk, you have to go to your local dvla office with all the paperwork, so doing it in a short space of time (eg weekend) just isn't possible. your biggest issue is the fact dvla think the car has been exported, so the numberplate won't be valid or could even have been reused, If your caught by an anpr camera then your going to be in for some pain.

I'm a little confused as to how / why the swiss are allowing people to part import a car but leave invalid uk plates on for a year??

The only way I can see you can get round this limbo is fully import the car, or trailer it back to the uk, or sell it to one of the car export companies here (which will give you next to nothing for it)

Obviously the correct way to do things is MOT and Tax your car just before you leave Blighty, then drive it as a fully legit UK registered car for your one year grace period. We did this and Zurich had no problems insuring us.

Anyway in this case I'm not sure if the OP did actually notify DVLA that the car was being exported, or whether she just did a SORN declaration.
