Without plates

Hi,
just moved to Brunnen - Schwyz. Can anybody tell me why there are so many cars standing on parkings without plates? Is this some way to save on taxes? Or ....?

I can imagine the photographers directions, "Can we get a tool belt on that man?", "Let's pull up that shirt a bit", "Now think greasy pig."

And before everyone starts doing it, I think this is only allowed if the 'parking' is on private ground. I don't think it is permitted to have a car without plates on 'public' parking places. I'm prepared to be corrected though.

Hey, that's interesting. I know you change plates when you change cantons, but I didn't know that garages own the number plates and can reuse them.
When we moved to Zurich, and got our new 'ZH' plates, our UK plates were destroyed. And our 'ZH' plates were destroyed when we got our new 'VD' plates. Both times, I wanted to keep the UK plates and the ZH plates (as souvenirs), but I got laughed at!

The garage doesn't own the plate, the canton does but they have a "U" after the last figure which lets garagistes drive any car, insured, which they need to for their business, ie letting potential clients test drive for instance.

The canton does not destroy the plates they eventualy get re-issued. I think once you hand them in, they are kept in strock for a minimum of 1 year before being re-issued, hence why you can't keep them.

If you really want to keep as a souvenir however, you can always say you lost a plate and then they will make you a new one with same number, and charge you for this

Re: Without plates

In most US states if not all you can send back your plates (actually, have to) to be able to suspend or cancel insurance. So you end up with a vehicle with no plates (but it has to be kept on your private property, not in the street). So there are other countries where this happens.

Re: Without plates

If you have a wechselschild (2 cars/1 plate) the car without the plates has to be on private land.

Being how infrequently I get one of the cars out of the garage it could take a month before I knew it was stolen!!

you can not park on a public parking without plates, you will be fined and your wheel will be locked!
Also applies to motorcycles.

Re: Without plates

Does this can be done also in Basel? To have multiple cars and only pay one insurance and one tax?

Yes, it's standard practice throughout Switzerland. But I think it only applies to the insurance, not the annual road tax.
