Front License Plate Requirement

I am driving a foreign registered car in Switzerland. I just heard from a colleague that in Switzerland there is no requirement to have the front license plate. However, I did not find any information supporting that and my language skills are too limited to contact the non-English speaking officials, and based on experience will not even try..

My car will eventually be registered in Switzerland and will have Swiss plates. I just would not want to drill holes for my foreign front plate, which is much bigger than the Swiss one the car will eventually have.

Can somebody confirm is true or not that the front plate is not required. Thanks.

Re: Front License Plate Requirement

Every car I've seen on the roads has a front plate.

Re: Front License Plate Requirement

It is not required on a motorcycle. It is required on a car.

Hi there,

I am pretty sure a front plate is legally required, tho I have seen plenty of cars that drive around with them attached (probably) with just some string, or similar.

As long as it is visible, I doubt there will be a problem.

So that may solve the hole boring problem...

I know plenty of people (Swiss, just for the record) that do this in the case of owning more than one vehicle (camper van for example) saves having to register/and therefore pay twice, or something like that... They just swap them as necessary.

Happy motoring....

There is an exemption for foreign registered cars, but only if the country where the vehicle is registered does not issue front plates. (VZV, Art. 114 Abs. 3)
Since you do have a front plate, I guess there's no exemption in your case.

BTW, I think that driving without a front plate, even if legal, will attract a lot of unwanted attention from the police.
