do all radars have flash?

Hi,
I was driving a couple of days ago, and i kinda speeded up a bit on the highway, but luckily i didn't see any flashes while i'm up there,
does tis mean that i got away with it?
or there could be radars or cameras without visible flash (infrared cameras or something)

Re: do all radars have flash?

I was doing 10 km/h to 15 km/h over the limit on a motorway in Ticino 4 months ago and went past a camera without a flash. Still haven't received a ticket. However there are cameras like what they have in the UK for average speed check--these are actually video cameras that read your number/licence plate automatically. If it looked like a Gatso camera (click link below) and it didn't flash then I'd say you're alright.

It's not the boxes in the roadworks by Mendrisio is it? They're usually fakes made to look like cameras.

Usually the camera will flash, you'll notice the red or white out of the corner of your eye.

Rule of thumb: speed only on the highway and only where it's 120 and not restricted. Keep your speed down to the fine you're prepared to pay. Simples

Except if you're in Canton Lucerne where I was driving 132 km/h on an open stretch. There was a mobile camera under the bridge and a warning sign (those small tent pyramid types) on top of the bridge which I could only see last minute. Too late! 120 or whatever francs! Now I don't condone speeding (especially in built up areas) and it was my fault for breaking the 120 limit (disclaimer over!), but sometimes you have to wonder if the location of some cameras are for safety or making money.

I'm not complaining. Once you realise you're in a 'fining' country (e.g. police systematically giving out fines rather than a telling off) then you get used to it. You break the rules, you pay. Once I was on my bicycle and didn't stop at a stop sign; I just looked left and right but as I didn't put my foot on the ground, the police behind me fined me CHF 60. They were very polite. Another one I learnt the hard way was a 20 franc fine for riding no-handed again on my bicycle.

You will know within a week or so whether you got away with it or not!

When I see those flashes I hardly ever know whether it was meant for me or the one in front of me so I always wait rather impatiently whether I'll get something in the post ... a bit silly but that is was it does to me, those silly flashes !!!

Re: do all radars have flash?

I was going 15-20 km/h more than the limit (80km/h) when I realized there was a speed camera.

Do you know if the speed camera model below should flash in case I will get a speed ticket?

Many thanks!

Re: do all radars have flash?

The police use also laser-based cameras, which basically take a digital picture and measure your speed, without a flash.

I was stopped this way on my motorbike so from experience, even if you do not see a flash it does not mean some cop has just taken your picture.

So the REAL rule of thumb is: always smile, since you don't know if you have had your photo taken or not!

Kidding: don't speed if you can't face the music afterwards.

Re: do all radars have flash?

If there's a little cube on the top of the radar installation. If it still has some flashbulbs that haven't gone off yet, then they will flash. A little man normally puts new flash cubes in daily, but their supply has become a little trickier in recent years, what with all this digital stuff, so one might just get away with it.
