Re: SBB promotion - Milan from CHF25 one way

I prefer to rent a car and in 3 hours be comfty in Milano, instead 6hours trip, 2 broken trains, hours waiting without any information, and delays delays delays... As regular user of cisalpino had tooo many this kind of experience, I think my patience is really gone, NEVER cisalpino again. They should ban this train

With the Austrian redticket you always find the best bargain for your Austrian Airlines flight at a glance. Concerned about hidden fees? The Austrian redticket covers outward and return flight including all taxes and fees. Get free drinks & snacks on board, earn miles, and take advantage of mobile or web check-in at no additional cost. EUR78 ( I booked mine already )

Milan / Malpensa - Vienna
Travel period: from Apr. 1, 2011
Booking: March 17, 2010 - December 31, 2011
Minimum stay: 1 Sat. night or 2 Nights

Yes folks, the offers from the Italian version does not have a booking fee at all and offers are way cheaper than the Swiss site of this carrier ( even cheaper than Flyniki.

Foodies, if you happen to be in Milan and fancy some Sri Lankan "buffet", give Lucky Seven a go.

I am biased ( was free for me as is for any birthday boy / gal ).

Hi,

I am making this trip in a few weeks and as someone who clearly has done this frequently, I was wondering whether you could let me know how close to on-time this train usually arrives in Milan? Mine leaves around 4 in the afternoon from Zurich.

Thanks!

Brett
i've been to and from milan around 12 times and not a single train was on time! closest was this weekend when it arrived in milan a mere 20 minutes late.

Re: SBB promotion - Milan from CHF25 one way

I must have been very fortunate then, with my trains ( both the Eurocity and the S10 TILO ) never having been late for more than 10 minutes since 2009. The additional delay might be attributed to the customs checks at Chiasso station, where the southern end is patrolled by the Italians.

Via the Domodossola route to Milano Centrale, at most 10 minutes delay and that was once within the last 12 months.

Is there a way to get these specials via notification by email? I remember
a previous version of the sbb.ch web site that had a login page on the
first page. Now I can't even find out where to log in anymore.

Perhaps by having an account with SBB TicketShop ? Even then, some deals escape their newsletters and emailshots.

https://www.sbb.ch/en/ticketshop/b2c/

Click at the bottom of the screen ( on mine, it says My Acccount )

But EF can be pretty efficient too

Re: SBB promotion - Milan from CHF25 one way

out of interest, does anyone know of a way to buy the return ticket from milan to zurich hb in milan without queueing up at the ticket office?

i tried the fast ticket machines, but they didn't seem to sell international tickets (or i was doing something wrong). i don't buy the ticket beforehand as i'm not sure the day/time i return.

Apart from the Allegro service in Italy ( connecting to Austria ), there is now a new Thello service to Paris and other French destinations.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thello

Rates per passenger per trip, all taxes except optional travel insurance.

Cabin bed, breakfast is included.

Smart & Go tariffs are valid for reservations no later than 7 days before departure. Limited seats, offers subject to conditions.

Italian trains "super-saver"

I'm thinking of visiting Italy in the summer and was checking train prices between different cities and came across a pretty great offer: travel between major cities for only 9 Euros. Last summer the price between Rome and Florence for instance was between 33 and 55 Euros if I remember correctly.

So anyway thought I'd post the link in case it proves helpful to other EFers

http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/inde...003f16f90aRCRD

(If the link doesn't work, go to: http://www.trenitalia.com/, select english language, and then "Offers and deals")

Kash.

The SBB Supersaver to Milan is still on:

Supersaver Ticket Europe to Italy.

Limited number of places.
Purchase 14 or 7 days before departure.
Prices from CHF 25.00.
2nd class only.
No exchanges, no refunds.

There is a new competitor to Trenitalia:

Italo

http://www.italotreno.it/EN/Pages/default.aspx

These depart from the other Milan station ( not Milano Centrale although nearby ):

Milan Porta Garibaldi

Trenitalia has some super low prices especially on 1st Class High Speed trains for EUR9.

http://www.fsitaliane.it/homepage_en.html

One can make a day trip to eg Genoa.

If you are going for the EUR9 tickets in Italy, choose the Frecciarossa ETR500 trains as these offer the best comfort.

The Frecciabianca is OK.

Too little time, but I do this often to have a good buffet in Milan. With a GA, free to Chiasso, and then a slow train return Chiasso to Milano for CHF11 for GA holders.

As lunch buffet starts at 12:00 noon, the slow train takes me from Chiasso at 10:16am to Milano Porta Garribaldi, reaching Milano Centrale at 11:45am and I take the slow train back at 13:25, reaching Chiasso at 15:00 and the ICN back to Zürich by 7pm.

If you do not have a GA, then the SBB Supersaver offer is ok at CHF23 one way. Spend a night over and return. Hostels are cheap around EUR14 a night. You can also get a cheap EUR9 ticket to Genoa ( allow 6 hours there ) one way or to Bergamo ( most buses now from Milano Centrale to Bergamo airport cost EUR5 one way or EUR9 return ).

In Bergamo, get the ATB 24 hour ticket for EUR4.50. In Milano Centrale, you might want the ATM 24 hour ticket or a 10 carnet ticket.

I just got a good haircut for EUR7 in Bergamo

Re: SBB promotion - Milan from CHF25 one way

Depends what you would like to do in Milan, most people would go to Duomo and depending on your taste you take pics for hours just there, then around the Duomo there is quite a few shopping Alleys, 10 min walk is the Castello, there is plenty of museums in the Castello itself. There is loads to see in Milan depending on your taste. I would try spend a few hours in Naviglia (canal district) in the evening for a aperitif. Try to also book a viewing of Michael Angelo's Last Supper at the church of St. Maria Dell Grazie (book in advance to save time).

coming back to your question is it possible to do this in roughly 6 hours if we leave an hour each side to get from and to Milano Central, then from personal experience yes it is possible but you will have to prioritze (e.g. you wont be able to see all the museums in the Castello)
