Emergency! Suggestions for things to see/do for a week

Hi @ll

This is kind of urgent situation. Some friends (3-4 aged around 24) are coming from UK to visit one of my friend (he's living in Zofingen, near Olten) in switzerland and he asked me for suggestions where he could take them. They will come this thursday (13.01.2011) and leaves back next tuesday (18.01.2011). So I want to know how we can entertain them for almost 6 days and show them what swiss can offer in general. Because of this short notice we couldn't plan anything much. What I know is they want to sledge once (if they liked it then no more plans needed, any day without a plan can be filled with sledging ). As for the starting point:

- sledging in Engelberg + visit to Titlis (in one day possible). I wanted to plan a trip to Pilatus, my favourite, but is closed until march due to maintanence.
- Luzern, Kappell bridge, Verkehrshaus, IMAX, Gletschergarten, Löwendenkmal
- Rheinfalls. It would take only some hours and how can we use rest of the day? Any interesting places near to Schaffhausen, on the way back?
- Bern, Bundeshaus, Münster, Bear pit, Einsteinshaus (before noon) + Geneva, Lake, fountain jet d'eau, UNO (after noon), is this also possible in a a day?
- Zurich, Uetliberg, night out in Zurich. What else to do in Zurich? I don't think they are much into shopping

Where to go on which day is not fixed and also whether to travel by car or train!

Please give your feedbacks and suggestions and if I missed out anything or I could add

Thank you all!

Verkehrshaus - min. half a day, then take them on the Wilhelm Tell Express for a sumptuous feed.

1st / 3rd Sunday noon free ? Take them for a 2-3 hour tour of the Sissach "special" Museum - not too far away from Olten. Owner speaks good English. More.

How about a day in Lugano or Locarno so that they can see a bit of all the language regions in CH? Take the train through the Gotthard tunnel.

Re: Emergency! Suggestions for things to see/do for a week

On your Rheinfalls day, you could either link it into the Zürich evening or take a trip along the Rhein - Stein am Rhein is a nice little place to visit too, or you could head down to Konstanz (or somewhere else on Lake Constance / Bodensee - there's heaps around there, in three countries!).

Depending on your interests, there are heaps of options in Zürich: Kunsthaus (art gallery), various big churches (Grossmunster & Fraumunster are the two biggies, some others also have some tours at times), trips on the lake or river ... or you could sit in the HB and have some beers while watching people go by for a while until dinner.

Re: Emergency! Suggestions for things to see/do for a week

Thanks guys for the suggestions.

@jrspet - uhh that was a creepy museum! but good to knw this unknown place. can we use tageskarte for wilhelm tell express? is swisspass = tageskarte?

@möpp - yes, i could consider one day going to italian side. any scenic train to lugano/locarno?

@araqyl - i remember now theres a boat ride starts from landesmuseum near HB and makes a round trip over the zurich lake around 1hr and back. thats also a good idea just to watch people go by in HB during rush hour.

the normal train to Lugano goes through some wonderful scenery and that's before you consider any of the Glacier express-type trains. Enter into 15 degrees (OK maybe 10 now) and sunshine this weekend

You could take the slower train and go in 1st class in the panorama carriage on the train.

Lugano is better than Locarno btw.

Re: Emergency! Suggestions for things to see/do for a week

Re Zurich, I would agree with araqyl that you can easily tie it into the day you see the Rheinfall - it only really requires an afternoon and the Uetliberg only needs a few hours max, particularly at this time of year when walking up isn't an attractive option.

I note you don't have any Interlaken towns (Interlaken itself, Mürren, etc) on your list - I would think it would be a whole day kind of deal, but my wife and I love the place so would highly recommend it - perhaps a trip up from Interlaken to Mürren with lunch in Mürren, then back to Interlaken for a boat trip on the Thunersee or maybe Interlaken to Kleine Scheidegg, lunch at KS, then onto to the Jungfraujoch? It's not cheap but is pretty cool.

Hello,

I was recently in a similar situation. We did several sightseeing things already suggested but I also found that guests were happy staying home with fondue, Swiss beer and some wine. Coming from Texas, fondue is not so common so very much enjoyed.

Have fun and don't fret -- all will work out fine.

Another suggestion: Kaptain Joe's Haifisch Bar in Zurich. Revel at the expensive beers while girls try to convince you to buy champagne for them to stir the crap out of

Re: Emergency! Suggestions for things to see/do for a week

could anyone tell if swisspass similar to tageskarte?

I thought of Interlaken. That place itself is great. I also once went there but didn't do much :S just had this tageskarte and took train upto Interlaken and then back home before it got late for our connection trains/bus and all.

Just because its expensive I didn't even go to Jungfraujoch yet! And as my friends are all students I don't think that would be an option.
@PerthPair - whats interesting in Mürren? the landscape?

yeah, one day of rest with swiss food, raclette/fondue (if they would like cheese!), might be also great

Re: Emergency! Suggestions for things to see/do for a week

Speaking of tickets, check your Gemeinde's website (they should have one!) to see if any Gemeindetageskarten are available any of those days - as I understand it (and I've used a few with guests!) they're basically a 1-day GA for 35 francs, limited numbers available through your Gemeinde ... if you can't spot your Gemeinde's website, you could try asking at an office (of the Gemeinde, not the SBB or ZVV!).
Not sure if they're valid on special routes (eg, William Tell Express), but they might be.

The quaintness of the village itself (although admittedly you can get that feel in a number of Swiss towns), and the views/landscape (watching mist rise up the valley and paragliders drifting downwards while having lunch is a great experience) are what got me

Geneva will have to be a day by itself - together with the charming town of Lausanne which I love. You can also take the boat over to France to the Evian mountains.

Other things you can do include:

1. Zürich: Uetliberg + walking tour around the old town, the town of Rapperswil, Jules Verne bar for drinks in the evening and a dinner at Zeughauskeller on Paradeplatz.

2. A day trip to Bern, and the neighbouring town of Thun. I find it very pretty - even as you get out of the train station with the Alps in the background. Stunning views.

3. Rhein Falls and a stop over to the pretty little town of Stein Am Rhein

4. A day trip down to Lugano

5. A day trip to Geneva and Lausanne

6. Day trip up to Flumserberg for sledging /alternatively, Davos and Klosters are not too far from Zurich too for these winter activities.

There you go - 6 days easily filled covering the German, French and Italian parts of Switzerland.

Re: Emergency! Suggestions for things to see/do for a week

Some of your suggestions seem exhausting! Berne and Geneve in one day is just way too much.

Some things our guests have loved that are not too far from Olten:

1. Gruyere, including the H.R. Geiger Alien bar and the chateau, short bus trip up to Moleson for fondue and picture taking, tour (very short, yet very interesting) of the Gruyere cheese factory.

2. Train to Gstaad, walk around village, ogle at rich people, fondue at one of the fabulous restaurants. Other nearby villages to see, Chateau D'Oex, Rougemont.

3. Walk along the lakefront in Lausanne, visit the Olympic Museum, take the Metro to Lausanne Flon, eat at Le Nomade or Kai Zen in the city center. Take the Metro one stop further to Bessiere, walk across the bridge (multiple photo ops) and up to the "Old Town" around the cathedral.
