Day trips from Neuchatel.

We've been here a couple of months now and I haven't really seen much other than the inside of the house and a load of cardboard boxes (mostly now empty thankfully)

Next week my son will be away skiing so I thought i'd take the opportunity to visit the area a bit more sine I won't have to be home midday for the obligatory 2 hour lunch break.

Does anybody have any suggestions of places to go that are feasible in a day. I have a car so transport isn't an issue. The OH will be at work so would like to be home to spend some time with him in the evenings.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Day trips from Neuchatel.

What a shame I'll be too busy next week, with a friend arriving. etc. and getting ready to go skiing for a week next Saturday.
Townwise, Yverdon, Bern and Soleure are all interesting and very close. And Fribourg, and Gruyères are not too far either. The Watch Museum in Le Locle (home of the Nardin watch dinasty) in a delight.
Morat on the other side of the Lake is a lovely small medieval town.
Hope you son has a great ski trip, and you a relaxing and interesting week.

Re: Day trips from Neuchatel.

Grandson Castle Route

Yverdon–Grandson–Gorgier–St-Aubin NE

The Grandson Route leads from Yverdon, along the shores of the Neuenburg lake, past the Grandson castle and on to St-Aubin. The Yverdon-les-Bain region was already a popular spot known for the healing powers of its waters as far back as the stone and Roman age.

( change the region on the right side of the page for more ideas ).

Re: Day trips from Neuchatel.

Yes, a great road- but keep away from the new Motorway which by-passes villages and under many tunnels. Forgot - why not spend a morning in Yverdon spa, then visit the town. You can then do a circular route following the lake (again NOT on motorway, but via Estavayer, etc) back to Le Landeron via the South side.

There are of course fabulous hike/walks in the area - but this is not really the season, too slippery. My favourite are the Creux-du-Van, and the Gorges de l'Areuse, and even better and wilder, the Gorges de la Poetta Raisse. Will organise meets for all 3 in summer, for any in NE area who'd like to join us.

Re: Day trips from Neuchatel.

Hey, if you would like some company I'm free on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (I wish I was working some of those days at least, but I'm not!). If you want some alone time, that's cool too. I haven't really seen many places since I arrived, either

really close to neuchatel are la chaux-de-fonds and Chaumont http://www.neuchateltourisme.ch/en/l...umont.912.html. I used to go to Chaumont all the time. Great view. Unfortunately the funicular to get there has not been working for awhile but you can drive there. Honestly doing a general google search comes up with some pretty good ideas. Even lake excursions. http://www.magicswitzerland.com/acti.../neuchatel.htm

Finally Chasseral is worth visiting. You can hike or drive and there is a restaurant at the top so you can relax and enjoy the view.

I guess I should add that since Switzerland is small to begin with it, is easy to make a day trip anywhere. If you enjoy zoos, I suggest the Zurich and Basel Zoo. I hear the Basel Zoo is the pride of the area and from what I can see on the website, I understand why.

Re: Day trips from Neuchatel.

You can also come up to Ste-Croix and visit the CIMA music box museum. If you don't fancy the drive up from Yverdon (winding road) the little railway runs from Yverdon - Ste Croix. If the weather is fine the journey is beautiful and takes 35 mins) www.reuge.ch
If you come up let me know and we can meet for a coffee.

In the summer you must do the walk up to the Chasseron - fabulous ..

Re: Day trips from Neuchatel.

Forgot - you could of course drive up to Pontarlier, just over the border, via the Val-de-Travers, or via Yverdon and Vallorbe. Up to 150E per person, but there is a limit on meat and butter, can't remember. If you do, pop in for coffee on the way back. Pm for details. Market day if Thursday in town centre, but of course there are all the big shops like HyperU, Leclerc, Carrefour, etc, etc.
