Looking for travel deals to Paris and later to UK - suggestions?

Hey EF folks. I am looking for ways to make my trip(s) inexpensive - I am traveling with my 4 year old son and am also wanting to take the train over the plane. I am 6 mos pregnant - and that's the advice - avoid flying. So....going to Paris (rt) looks like it's 413 CHF (for the two of us) and I have a 1/2 off travel card in Switzerland.

Going to London (rt) is around 740CHF for the two of us! Paris is for fun - and to meet up with a friend - and London is business. The trips are at different times and can't be combined. Any suggestions on finding discounts/deals in Switzerland? In London there is "lastminute" - and that seems to be a pretty good place to find deals - but haven't found anything here. Thanks for any ideas!

Re: Looking for travel deals to Paris and later to UK - suggestions?

The key is to book early for TGV then Eurostar - just like for any budget airlines. Last time I went to UK by train, a few months ago, I paid 114Euros return. The best time to book is 90 days in advance - when tickets become available for sale - then prices go up steadily. Flexibility with dates, avoiding school/official holidays and mid-week travel also help greatly.

Not sure how much this saves, but we go from our nearest French station. If anybody ever wants to do that, pm to arrange to safely leave car here, take bus to French station (10 mins), etc. Departure of train just before 10am.

It could be cheaper to make not the direct way(for example basel-paris), take a detour (basel -Mannheim-Paris), or on the way to London(via Cologne), but with a small child (and the factor you are pregnant) there are less options.
I think it should be cheaper to fly to london, because there is more competition

114E considering that it takes me door to door, avoiding the 100km to Geneva +/- parking or train, and taking me straight into the heart of London- is excellent value I think.

Thanks all - I am going this Sunday to Paris - just to meet up with a friend - and then to the UK sometime around the 10th - both of which are last minute. The UK trip is to do a UK citizenship ceremony - (woo hoo !). Which I have to follow through with quickly for variety of reasons. C'est la. Pre-planning is not one of my strong points .

Have a great time. I had planning a long time ahead - but it makes a HUGE difference money-wise. A friend and family have been 'booked' to visit over half term from UK. When the flights became available in Oct. she would have paid £30 each. She booked 2 weeks ago at £200 each. x4 it is a lot of money.

I looked further into flying - will talk with my doc just to confirm - but will probably fly to UK - it is so much cheaper. Thanks all!

If considering the train, try the TGV Europe website way in advance for deals ( by up to 90 days ). I even found 1st class return deals on PREM tickets.
