Places to Visit in Switzerland

Hi,

Myself with my family is visiting Switzerland on 11th Aug'2007 for 3 days.
I will be staying in Zurich on 11th, 12th and 13th and would like to see some good places in and around Zurich.

1. What is the cheapest mode of travelling in Switzerland. We have planned to buy Swiss Saver Flexipass to travel different places in Switzerland. Please let me know if any other cheap mode of travelling in Switzerland which covers our place of visit to switzerland.

2. I would like to know which are the good places where we can visit. We have planned to visit Rhine Fall (1st day) , Lucerne & Mount Titlis (2nd day) and Interlacken or Jungfrau (3rd day).

Please let me know if the pass which I am planning to buy is enough to travel to these places. Any other good place where we can visit (and skip from our plan if any other good place which is better then what we have planned).

We want to utilize max. time and get benefit of our switzerland visit.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Places to Visit in Switzerland

You know its Street Parade that weekend, dont you ? Either get stuck into the festivities or get well out of the town centre on the Saturday...

To answer your questions, there is a whole sub-forum devoted to free time and day trips and another to transport on this very site....

If you're not coming to Zurich for Street Parade, I would actually steer clear of the city that weekend. You're either "in" or you're "out"

I am not aware about the street parade.
Is it difficult to go out during Saturday, Sunday and Monday from Zurich.
We have already booked ourself in flight and booked hotel in advance.

Please let me know how difficult it will be to go out from Zurich and Visit Rhine Fall, Lucerne, Mount Titlis and Interlaken on these 3 days.

Re: Places to Visit in Switzerland

Pretty difficult. They hold basically a big party in the train station and I can't imagine driving would be much fun either. If the weather is nice based on past numbers Wikipedia reference-linkStreet_Parade there could be over a million people coming into Zurich. If you get out of Zurich early on the morning of the 11th you should be okay. Coming back, however, regardless of the time on the 11th it's going to be a little crazy.

Edit: Oooh, just noticed you'll be going by train. I know Rhine falls is really easy to get to from Zurich by train. Interlaken is only a couple of hours away from Zurich and from there you can get to Grindelwald in not too much time. Lucerne is also really close. I'd use the 11th to go to Interlaken since it would be best to stay out of Zurich all day Saturday. Also the Ticino region (south Switzerland, Lugano, Lucarno etc.) is very beautiful and tends to have better weather than other parts of Switzerland.

Also, I don't know if you're going to be driving but even if you were you're schedule seems to be a smidge over ambitious for three days.
I don't think he's planning on driving as he mentioned getting a swiss pass

Just so you are aware to visit Jungfrau from Zurich you are looking at 4.5 to 5 hours of travel to get to the top, check out http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm for train times, If you are visiting Luzern I would alternatively take a trip up Mount Rigi or Mount Pilatus instead, you can take a lovely boat ride across the lake to get to the mountain railways for both mountains, from luzern its another hour to Engelberg to visit Titlis so after a trip around Luzern and then a further hour to Engelberg you are not leaving yourself much time - but it can be done.

Stein am Rhein and Rhein Falls are easily doable trips from Zurich

If you PM me your e-mai address I have a list I put together for family members visiting me with info on places to visit and travel times and costs etc..

Your Swiss flexi pass will give you free travel on train, tram, boat and bus but doesn't include any mountain railways but your pass will get you half price travel on the majority of these

Hope this helps
Nicky

Re: Places to Visit in Switzerland

Sorry this response is a little belated, I've been on vacation. Anyway, there is a thread called "Travel passes for visitors" that may help to answer some of your travel pass questions.
