What to do on Sundays??

Everything is closed on Sunday and I have nothing to do but waste my time on the computer. ( Once classes start I probably won't have time for anything though )

I'm not relgous so I probably won't go to church. Though it would be interesting to see a swiss church.

What do the Swiss do on Sunday?
What do you do on Sunday?

Re: What to do on Sundays??

Last time I checked the outdoor mountain range next to Fribourg (and stretching to France, Germany, Austria and Italy) was open 24x7x365.
And then there are other things than shopping malls: Museums, cinemas, restaurants - just to name a few.

Re: What to do on Sundays??

Sundays are sacred. We sleep in, have a delicious breakfast (this morning was fresh fruit salad with yogurt and museli), muck around in the studio for a bit, do some yoga, phone the parents every couple of weeks, do some baking and either go out or have people around for afternoon tea and drinks or a long lunch with lots of conversation, then have an easy dinner and get to bed early (or stay up way to late reading ). We also head to museums, go for walks if the weather is good and catch up with friends for coffee.
Sundays are gorgeous!

It has been very nice since I arrived here in Switzerland. No snow or rain. Just sunny.

Re: What to do on Sundays??

For Swiss, Sunday is the sacred day of rest, reserved for doing nothing, or social/family get-togethers -- usually involving a good lunch, with plenty of wine, and then an afternoon stroll to walk off any excesses.
Living in Fribourg, you are in a very strong Catholic part of the country, so religion and church going do play an important part in many peoples' lives, and other activities may be a bit toned down/diluted.

However, there are also many doing outdoor activities -- the nearest ski centre is in Schwarzsee, which can easily be reached by bus .... Bahnhof to Plaffeien, change, then Plaffeien to Schwarzsee -- could take 45 mins. to an hour, but realistically is only about 30 mins. car journey. There is more to do than skiing there.

http://www.schwarzsee.ch/en/welcome.cfm?

If you haven't checked out Fribourg Tourism, here is the link:

http://www.fribourgtourisme.ch/en/welcome.cfm?

You need to check out the soon forthcoming carnival/fasnacht, in the unterstadt/vielle ville of Fribourg. All the marching bands should be right up your street (as you share your username with John Philip).

Bern is less than 30 mins train ride, with stuff going on on Sundays, with some of the cinemas showing some/many (haven't been for a while) films (movies) in original language (normally English) - something for a rainy day.

EDIT: Looking for friends in Berne

Re: What to do on Sundays??

Try a bit of people watching: - go to Paddy Reilly's in Grand Place, and (subtly) observe the male clientèle to see if you can work out who is, and unmask, PaddyG.

Thank you for the groan baselboo. I knew for sure someone would feel the urge to do that, but honestly, what was wrong with my remark? Madame has nothing but her computer when the stores are closed. That's exactly what she wrote.

Re: What to do on Sundays??

I go to church where there are many expats. Two hour service and coffee\cake afterwards to rejoyce and socialize. This evening I'm off to the restaurant with same church people. It should be fun.

Normally in good weather I would be somewhere up in the mountains.. but this weekend I went on Saturday instead.

The canton of Fribourg is fantastic if you enjoy outdoor activities. Even without going right up into the mountains, you could walk from Fribourg itself along the Gottéron gorge to St Ursen, then get the bus back. Or walk along the Gérine from Marly towards Giffers and get the bus back from there.

And if you don't like walking at all... hop on a bus and go to Bulle or Gruyères, go to the thermal baths at Charmey.

I think what I am trying to say is: make the most of this exceptional weather to get out and about

I don't really shop just look...

I ask to get ideas so I'm not on the computer ....
There are a few museams I will probably go see some time during the semester. I'm only here for 8 months to study might as well see everything!

My hobbies are band ( I play the tuba but I can't do that here as I couldn't bring my tuba with me ) knitting and kayaking ( I couldn't bring my kayak with me. )

We walked around the whole old city today.

I'm a student. I don't exactly have the most money in the world.

I can't wait for carnival to start.
The reason for my user name is because I play the sousaphone in marching band.
