After nine months of living in Horgen, Zurich, and having visited several Cantons of Switzerland, I would be interested to know what other members consider to be the most inspirational place in Switzerland?

My favourite place, so far, is the foot of the Matterhorn at Riffelsee which inspired one of my oil paintings.

Depends on what you want to see. I am an artist myself and have been greatly inspired by some tiniest, and most remote villages, but I can tell you what I thought most impressive.

City - Bern, and with the happy bear habitat instead of the pit, I like it even more.

Mountains - Valais and in particular the Valley leading to Arolla. Take the hike up to the glacier Arolla for a stunning site of two glaciers, if your tough otherwise relax down below at the base of the mountain and pull out your drawing pencils.

Unique Villages - Ardez, I think canton st Gallen. The houses are painted in the most beautiful patterns and symbols.

Rolling hills - Appenzelle

Prettiest Castle - thats hard...chateau nyon (i'm biased ) Chateau Chillon, Montreux is just bad to the bone though!

Waterfall - of course the Rhine Fall

Lake - on a good day, Lake Lucern they have the prettiest steamboats and beautiful moutains surrounding the lake.

The view looking back over Zermatt from the top of the Wikipedia reference-linkKlein_Matterhorn cable car is simply breathtaking (literally, at 3883m).
Even I could appreciate it in my hungover and oxygen-deprived state.

I think that's the prettiest I have seen, and I have been very close. Dents du Midi.
Then Bern is lovely, really. Reminds me home, somewhat German, reasonable, flavor.

Which hut? We stayed at Cabane Sex Carro when we hiked near Dents du Midi. Very very nice. Crazy steep iced cliffs, tho.

Well, I've thought long and hard about your question. I've considered the views from Rigi, Hasliberg Goldern and the Uetliberg. I've considered the industrial heaven of Glarnerland and the medieval cockaigne of Stein am Rhein. I've considered the canyon in Fribourg town and the cascading waters of the Rheinfall. I even thought about Geneva for a second or two, before shaking my head and putting the kettle on.

Exhausted after all this thought, I finally came to the clear conclusion that the Most Beautiful Place in all of Switzerland is right here, in bed.

You can come and paint it, if you like.
Ok Ok I guess you seen it all,and now you go for the close up

Cabane du Vélan, above Bourg-St-Pierre. Easy access - about three and a half hours on a good path. The architecture of the hut itself is a bit weird - it's very modern and doesn't exactly blend in with the landscape - but what a view !

Views like that from one's garden are unfair, shouldn't be allowed.

Yes, Engadine is the word I was looking for, ooopps, i didn't have my map out

And well, geee, don't go too technical here. I am well aware of how the decoration is made. And besides Adam and Eve (most famous) there were lots of symbolic paintings in the different villages, which I prefered to the sgraffiti that is most commonly patterns. All is amazing though! Of all the villages in the upper and lower engadine that I visited, I chose Ardez as one of my favorites. It was the perfect small village allowing you to explore every corner on foot. There were great examples of sgrafitti and paintings. You cannot forget about the doors either, they are quite impressive and also unique to those of the other villages. All the cars were hidden, so it was like walking into a time bubble. And, if my memory serves me well, there is a tower sitting up on a hill just outside the village. It's just a marvelous place and a must see for anyone visiting the area.

There's another place called Engadine, a onehorse town in the Upper Peninsula ("da UP") of Michigan, USA, consisting of a gas station, a general store, a bar, a church somewhere on a hill, and a few farmhouses scattered over an area as large as an average Swiss canton. But I must say, Engadine, MI is not to be compared with the original.

The houses in the (Swiss) Engadine have those huge doors for a simple reason. They all were, and many still are, farmhouses of the single unit type, i.e. residential part and barn in one building. The accomodation part almost always faces the street. In fact, most of those villages are built in a manner that each house has at least one window that allows a free line of sight to one of the fountains in the streets where people gathered for a chat and some work. If that wasn't possible with a window, they built a window bay (oriel window) instead.

Now the problem is, most of those barns cannot be accessed from the street. There were no tractors or harvesters when those houses were built (most of them after the devastating campaigns of the Austrian Colonel Alois Baldirun 1621 - 1629), but there were hay waggons.

That's what the big door was for: The hay waggon was pulled through the door into the residential part and from there through a second, internal, door to the barn.

By the way, the tower on the hill in Ardez is what's left of the medieval Steinsberg Castle. Needless to say that Tarasp Castle, just a few miles down the valley, is one of the most beautiful castles in the country.
