Sights a maybe future expat should see in Basel

Hi, all. My husband's flying out to Basel in early March for some job interviews and the company involved has invited me to tag along (yay!). I've done my homework on the usual touristy places, but I'd love some suggestions into other stuff I might want to see as a possible future resident. I'd prefer to keep it to good stuff, so as not to freak myself out too much.

We'll be spending some time with a relo person, and it's my understanding that we'll tour the ISB and drive through some neighborhoods, amongst other stuff. We'll definitely hit the Kunstmuseum and some of the other touristy areas. What else should I check out in my free time? Some thoughts I had: a nice short hike if it's not too damp; a chocolate or candy shop for picking up gifts (preferably with a pleasant proprietor); maybe some other shops other than generic tourist shops for getting gifts/souvenirs; some sort of nice cafe for reading with a cup of coffee; and ??????

Thanks in advance!

You should take some of the trams and just ride around town. You will
get a feel for the layout of the town.

Additionally, you can find out what it would be like to live there.

Around the train station, you will probably find some tourist center that
explains in great detail the sights.

Re: Sights a maybe future expat should see in Basel

I recently interviewed a candidate from the States, and he came over with his wife to look around. I was surprised at her itinerary, because it looked a lot like yours.

If I had a short visit to Basel, my list of things to see would be very different. I wouldn't bother with most of the tourist sites (they'll still be here when you move back). Instead, I'd spend my time visiting things that would help me understand whether I would be happy living here.

It's a somewhat unusual itinerary, but I would spend some time browsing a grocery store, getting an idea for what's available and what I'll miss from home. I'd go to the local tourist office and ask about things to do on the weekend. I'd visit the community park, swimming pool, ice rink, etc to see what's available for leisure time. I'd ride the trams to get a sense of the city and its scale.

If you're coming to Basel, you might even rent a car and drive across the border. There's a lot available just over the border in St. Louis (France) and Lorrache & Weil-am-Rhein (Germany) that won't be on your relocation tour. Cross-border shopping can make a significant impact on your cost-of-living, so it's worth getting a feel for.

Finally, if you have any question about how the tax system, health insurance, retirement plans, etc work, now is the time to ask them -- you and your husband could schedule time with the interviewing company's HR department to answer just such questions.

If, after all this, you've still got time on your hands, then wander the town and hit the tourist sights!
