Why St Louis? And I definitely recommend Kayak. Be sure to employ the "flexible dates" feature if you can. Sometimes going on a different day can mean a significant drop in price and with flexible dates you search many days at once.

Why St Louis?
For the brewery tour and to see the Budweiser Clydesdales- that's the only reason I stopped in St Louis.

How cute! ^^^

Hey I glanced at it, but the beer goggles and realizing where I was (in the middle) made me skedaddle out of there.

The avi is a trial.

Re: flight to US?

The cheapest flights to the US are usually always to NYC. (All airlines
fly there, so there is fare competition).

It looks like the only international flights that come into St. Louis, are
from Cancun, Mexico and Toronto, Canada.

http://www.flightstats.com/go/Home/home.do (look up airport code STL)

Also check out the tripadvisor.com forums, :

The days of TWA and direct flights to St. Louis are (very sadly) well and truly over....

If TWA had direct flights out from St. Louis to ZRH or Milan,
I wonder what the load factors were.

Re: flight to US?

Looks like TWA only had direct flights to London and Paris from St. Louis.

Re: flight to US?

I did it some years back and flew into Chicago and caught the train to St Louis. That way I got to see a lot of stuff in addition that I would never have seen from a plane.

That is a nice idea. You can directly book the tickets from Amtrak.

St. Louis Union station itself is a tourist destination and relatively close (15 blocks) to other destinations of interest in St. Louis.

Re: flight to US?

http://www.hipmunk.com/ is a relatively new site but I really like the interface and have used it my last two trips. It factors in the time, cost, and "agony" nicely and quickly.

Links to orbitz.com so the transaction is based in USD. I contacted there customer service in Dec. but they don't yet link to ebookers.ch (orbitz's Swiss branch).

Mind you, the current Amtrak service doesn't stop in the historic Union Station but in a more mundane terminal that is a couple of blocks away. Or at least it did when I went there. It could be things have changed.

St Louis also has a tram that interconnects all the points of interest so getting around is really no trouble.

Re: flight to US?

When is she planning this trip. I came here from US west cost and flew on Air Berlin. I came with my son and dog all for under 900 us bucks. I do know that Air Berlin doesn't fly into the US again until May. May through Nov. She will have stop in Germany but then straight into the US.

Re: flight to US?

I just got an email that Lufthansa are offering some great fares to the US but you have to book by Thursday. For flights unti 31 May, Chicago as an example round trip for less than 700 Chf.

Yes, Air Berlin had very cheap transatlantic fares back in 2009, but not any more. Now they seem to be twice the price than the competition to the US.
Any travel search site shows all fares, including flights operated by Air Berlin.
