Any recommendations for a day trip to Austria with Kids in tow which is a couple of hours drive from Zurich?

Perhaps Innsbruck, might be abit longer than 2 hours though.

How old are the children? And are you after city visits or mountains and twee Tyrolean villages?

We holiday frequently in Seefeld in Tirol , above Innsbruck and about 3.5 hours drive from Basel so perhaps just outside your 2 hour limit?

In summer you can easily get up into mountains (cable cars, chair lifts, mountai railway), or visit the cute town centre or take the kids to walk along a (rather precipitous) river gorge, or go trout fishing (as long as you can cope with banging them on the head ... I couldn't)or go on a rather painful (but fab views) barfussweg (literally walk around mountain path with bare feet ..) or go to a rather idiosyncratic amusement park combined with summer bob bahn run which our kids love. These are all things within a few kms of Seefeld town centre.

And in winter .. snow .. ski ... I think you get the picture ...

Bregenz and Bregenzerwald area ( google them). There is loads to do summer and winter and probably the easiest area to get to from Zürich. I could be more specific if I knew children's ages and whrn you plan to make the trip.

Well then my earlier suggestion of the Seefeld region seems a good one, if it is not too far. We have holidayed there for years, both as a couple and then latterly with small children. There are good walks, all interspersed with mountain huttes with lots of play areas, and a "tractor train" which takes you out into the more inaccessible areas (for small legs walking at any rate) leaving you to walk back downhill if you so choose (the preferred direction of our two). They have a good website but am still a bit worried it might be a little far for your 2 hour stipulation.
