| | Chevrolet 100th Birthday in La Chaux-de-Fonds
Are you a Chevrolet fan? If so put the date in your diary : 19th June when 1000 Chevvies will be parading in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Neuchatel Jura). This to celebrate the 100th birthday of the brand.
Louis Chevrolet was indeed born in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1878, and created the first Chevvie with William C Durant, founder of General Motors, from 1911 onwards.

It is amazing the things that go on in Switzerland. I didn't realise that Chevrolet was Swiss.

To be fair, the Chevrolet family moved to nearby France when Louis was quite young, and he emigrated to the US in 1900.
Did you know btw that the famous architect Le Corbusier, was also born in La Chaux-de-Fonds. You can still visit the Maison Blanche, the villa he built for his parents, and La Villa Turque, now owned by Ebel watch company.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say: "Chevrolet first used its 'Bowtie emblem' logo in 1913. It is said to have been designed from wallpaper Durant once saw in a French hotel. More recent research by historian Ken Kaufmann presents a compelling case that the logo is based upon a logo for 'Coalettes'.[4] Others claim that the design was a stylized Swiss cross, in honor of the homeland of Chevrolet's parents."
Since Wikipedia doesn't even feature an article on Coalettes, here's some more info on the Chevrolet emblem and its background: http://home.earthlink.net/~scrippsbo...iehistory.html

A good example of how different groups of people interpret history, depending on their own background or (vested) interest. The article in the local paper definitely stated the gold cross was based on the Swiss flag.
So, who to believe Wiki or local paper and historians. | This user would like to thank for this useful post: | |

According to my experience, it's amazing how many Americans believe that Henry Ford invented the automobile, that Edison invented the incandescent light bulb and the phonograph, that Graham-Bell invented the telephone, and that Al Gore invented the Internets.
