What to see/do on one day visit to Zurich.

We've been here a few months now and have decided to explore the country a bit more so we have decided to visit this Zurich place that everybody talks so much about this weekend.

We are going to Technorama in Winterthur on Sunday but will have the whole day on Saturday to explore Zurich. What are the iinteresting things to do? Can you recommend places to visit?

We have an 11 year old so probably not too much 'culture' although he's happy to visit museums etc if they are the 'right' kind. He's very keen on boats and sailing.
I wouldn't mind a bit of shopping too as I guess there will be a much better choice of shops than we have in Neuchatel (not difficult really)

I know I can google to find suggestions but would appreciate personal recommendations as I find that they are usually more helpful.

You might be keen on the ZürichCARD which can be collected at Zurich HB Mainstation.

Circus and Kinder Zoo at Rapperswil perhaps ?

The Rhine Falls is a good place to go - bring your camera along. Accessible by rail.

Re: What to see/do on one day visit to Zurich.

You'd have to check timetables, but any of the following might be nice:

A kurzrundfahrt (short tour) on the lake.

A ride up and down the Limmat on the little glass roofed boats.

The Ghost Walk.

A wander down the Bahnhofstrasse (presuming you can arrange a second mortgage between now and then).

Lunch at the Odeon at Bellevue.

A coupe danmark at the Spruengli cafe on the Bahnhofstrasse.

Pork and potato based victuals at the Johanniter beerhall on Niederdorfstrasse.

If I think of any more I'll add them to the list...

Re: What to see/do on one day visit to Zurich.

I'm going to say +1 for the Rhinefall - best thing I've done so far in Switzerland (but then I'm a waterfall nut)

Otherwise: Schober for breakfast, get the proper fruhstuck with bircher muesli and eggs etc
Movenpick for lunch: Zurcher geschnezelles are both delicious, and very Zurcher.
Kronenhalle for dinner: you'll be dining with 7 of the world's 10 stuffiest people, but the food is Swiss and amazing, and the art on the walls is breathtaking.

For a stroll: Start off at Central and walk down the Niederdorf, hand a left at Muhelgasse and then immediate right into the Predigerplatz, out one of the small streets opposite and meander onwards and right untill you hit back to the Niederdorfstrasse. Continue on until you reach the Grossmunster, then turn right and walk down to the Limmat, cross the bridge and walk along the river back up (Schipfe) and towards Bahnhofstrasse.

oh! For an 11 year old rent a boat at Pier7 on the Limmat (it's a little motorboat that he can easily handle) - call in advance, they only rent in good weather. http://www.pier7.ch/0339159d340c6d60f/index.html

if the weather is ok go up the Uetliberg. All my guests have loved the walk from the station and up the Aussichtsturm. Also, there is a Planet walk up there which might be interesting for your child.
