Day trip to Basel

Hello everyone
i´m planning to go to Basel this weekend, it will be a one day trip, and i wanna see all the interesting and beautiful places there.
For now i chose these places:
The Cathedral, The Pfalz, Marktplatz and City Hall, Mittlere Brücke, Tinguely fountain, Basel´s Old town, Rhine port, Spalentor, St. Albantor, Merian Park, Grün 80, Lange Erlen, Basel Zoo...
What else? Maybe you have more suggestions? Or maybe some of those places aren´t as interesting as i think?

Re: Day trip to Basel

I suggest that there's no way you'll see all of those places (sufficiently long enough to do them justice) in one day. How about focussing on the central area of Basel and walking around town (it's small, if you walk non-stop from one side to the other you'll cover it all in less than an hour, but won't have enough time to see anything in detail). But including Lange Erlen, Grün 80, Rheinport, and other outlying areas will just leave you stressed and exhausted.

Can you spend the whole weekend?

Basel Zoo is (apparently) a must-see: it's Switzerland's most popular paid tourist attraction (Rheinfall is the top amongst all attractions). Personally, I feel I've seen better zoos, but my 3-year-old loves it.

If you're into parks, Grün 80 is the most diverse and interesting. Schützenmattpark offers a good café and playground for the kids; Kannenfeldpark is quite large with some cool slides for kids (and adults ), and Margarethenpark is quite peaceful, but smallish.

A nice walk along the Rhine (Klein Basel side) would be enjoyable if the sunshine stays, and don't miss the water current-propelled ferries that cross the Rhine at three points in the centre of the city.

Oh, and don't forget the Kunstmuseum (Art Museum), Museum Tinguely and the Bayeler Foundation -- but the latter is a fair way from the centre.

And finally -- please search the forum for more tips. Here's a start: Taking a day trip to Basel.

There is Dreirosenbrucke, indoor park for kids and a coffee shop for the parents to chill out. But be prepared to pay a little token for the park.

Basel Zoo was great last weekend in the sun, adults 18 CHF I think. Lange Erlen is all free but I would say too far out to do it and all the other things you have listed comfortably. Having said that our son seemed to enjoy the latter more.

I feel tired just looking at your plans

I agree with 22 yards and suggest starting off in the centre of town and seeing the main landmarks and then going onto either the zoo or one of the parks. Quality not quantity is the key here as you won't get a great impression of anywhere if you rush from pillar to post.

Have a nice trip
