| | Things to do in the city of Calvin
Believe it or not, in the 16 years we have been in CH, I have never once set foot in Geneva. Driven through it and past it many times, but never physically stopped, got out and looked around. Shocked huh?
Well, all that is about to change .
The outlaws arrive Sunday evening at Cointrin, so we thought we'd take the train down to GE during the afternoon and turn it into a family day trip before confronting meeting the crumblies to head back to FR.
Sooo, what to do, where to eat?

As for eating i can recommend this. Its not a bad place and its close to the lake. Or something in the old town

we went to the botanical garden in geneva, i believe we went on a sunday- and it was really a nice place to be on a beautiful spring day. not sure about the hours, but it may be an option, depending on what the folks like.
enjoy!

I've been to Geneva airport to go to the Montreux Jazz Festival a few times. We used to stay in a town called Vevey - stunning. Apparently Geneva's a hole.

Geneva is a nice city, a day is enough to visit the tourist spots.
The international community on the right side of the lake and the old town on the left.

A few ideas from me:
Visit the cathedral and climb the tower (costs a few CHFs) - the view is spectacular on a good day, and that gives you a good reason to wander up through the old town. There are some archaeological excavations underneath which you can visit too which are supposed to be interesting (although I haven't been personally yet). Afterwards head to Place du Bourg de Four for a drink in one of the cafés there.
From there you could stroll down through Parc des Bastions and look at Mr Calvin himself, carved about 10m tall in the wall backing on to the old town along with 3 of his buddies. You could also stop at the entrance to the Parc from Place Neuve for a game of chess or draughts if it takes your fancy on the giant checker boards there.
Also worth heading to Bains des Paquis which has a buvette where you can eat relatively cheaply (they have a fixed lunch menu plus some cakes and stuff) and a beach and nice views also - expect it to be packed if it's hot.
The Natural History Museum could be good if it's not so warm and/or you have some kids with you in need of distraction - http://www.ville-ge.ch/mhng/index.php | This user would like to thank GenevaSculler for this useful post: | |

lausanne is awesome, geneva is great too! you just need to go during the week when there are people around and have a look. i'm thinking you should make an event for drinks-whatever for your arrival to lausanne. we can be a fun bunch |

Geneva is lovely. Wonder around the English garden, hop over to Manor top floor for quick and cheap pizza on the terrace, see the botanical gardens, go to Bastions park to play giant chess, get some wine in one of the little restos anywhere near Rive, see if there is anything going on in Maison des Arts Gruetli. |

Geneva deserves more than a few hours or a day, it's full of interesting things, history is very interesting, there's the view from the Mountain Salève, all the parks and some interesting architecture (old façades (frontage ?)

If the weather is nice, consider taking a boat ride on the lake, see the CGN schedule. www.cgn.ch, a trip to Yvoire by boat for food, if you have the time is very nice.
A second water alternative, take the small boat, Mouette, as way of seeing the city from the water and crossing from rive gauche/droit (it is covered in genvea public transport fare). End by having food at the 'Perle du lac' line/stop, it is expensive to eat there, but well worth for an occasional treat.
